Pics of real big enclosures ?

Thanks for the concern. He has a 5.0 UV strip light and the substarte is crushed walnut shell. Crushed walnut shell is completely digestable and will not pose any risk to him. He never leaves the canopy of the tree anyway.

Crushed walnut shell is not digestible, it is merely small enough to pass through the digestive system without causing damage (usually). It will still cause an impaction if enough is ingested. Add that is organic and likely damp and can be a breeding ground for bacteria, molds, fungus and all manner of other pests and you've got a problem.

Steve,

Is the frame work made of wood or vinyle? Is the screen aluminum? Heck it looks like a greenhouse. Can you post some close-ups of the inside furnishings and the doors and sides? I just want to lust a bit (house prices need to get WAY down to move to Orange County where an outdoor setup makes sense!!).:D

I'll have to take some picture this weekend. Made of 2x2 wood for framing.

It is dry as the day it was put in there. All excess water is piped out the back of the tank to a floor drain.

I'm pretty sure that it is digestable but I'll definitely double check on that.

My boss at the pet store has a huge thing built outside with close to 15 veiled chams in it. I havent seen it but it sounds absolutely huge. All of them are females except like 2 males.

I have one question slash statement for you steve.... ants!?

Here's one natural way to control outdoors. I use Bounce indoors, as insurance, especially where my eggs are kept.

Ant Bait Recipe / Boric Acid Syrup

1-cup sugar
2-cups water
2 tablespoones boric acid

Mix and stir to dissolve. Use a plastic jar or tub with about 1/8" holes around top edge so ants can get in, but not bees and butterflies. Place some excelsior, wood shavings, dry grass, or styrofoam packing material in the jar to provide pathways for the ants to climb down to the syrup. Pour a small amount of syrup into the jar and set upright. Sucure it so that dogs, cats, and kids can't get into it. Refill liquid once a week or as needed until few ants are seen collecting bait or the bait stops disappearing.

the boric acid works. A friend of mine used a small amount of ivermectin (he had extra, Iguess), and mixed it with banana. No ants anymore.

I mixed banana with boric acid, and set it down in little cups. Within a few days, no ants. The stuff works very well. I woudl say sugar and water are better than banana though.

Steve,
Where do you get the boric acid? At the pharmacy? Liquid or powder? I have an out of control ant population, but don't want to kill off my frogs.
Thanks!

You've been informed Better. I wouldnt put anything on walnut ever. The mould/bacteria
issues possible are also of concern. Why do you feel substrate is nessesary anyway?
How is water removed? Ill bet its damp underneath. If its not how do you provide water?
Good luck with that.

Commercial paint stores, or local lumberyard will sell it in 2 to 5 lb. powder bags.

Both, ants see it as a food source so they gather it up and take back to colony. They consume and there nervous system breaks down, and they die. Thanks for the parson complement. This guy was so close to death when I received him to years ago, that a swear I saw the grim reaper blow him a kiss.

Water does not reach the substrate. I have a collection basin within the tree. All the water is funneled to a tube that goes into a 5 gallon bucket. Only moisture that may hit the bottom is his poop. I have checked many times to make sure no moisture was getting to the bottom. I personally just cannot stand a bare bottom. It just does not look nice. I will continue to monitor it for moisture just to be safe.

A substrate isn't always a bad thing. If you can keep it dry, it's fine, as long as it's not an impaction hazard. I use paper towels and newspaper most of the time. In a nice cage like that, where looks are important, and you can keep it dry, it's not bad at all.

Sure, in the vast majority of cases a substrate is not necessary. That doesnt' mean it's always a bad idea. For a display case like that, It's an asset. It looks great, and allows you to clean it up in sections.

You can find boric acid in the pest control section of some stores. It's used to kill roaches. They get it on them, clean it off, it shuts them down from the inside out - I'm pretty sure the way it works does not give them any chance at resistance. Works on ants really well, and it's safer than sprays.

This may sound stupid?! But Bounce, for washing clothes?? I had issues with ants coming inside to the cham cages..and when we move I'de like to get it under control! :)
