picky eater has gone back for thirds...

So after caring for my Verde since Thanksgiving my very picky eater has gone back for thirds this morning (unheard of).

When I first got Verde I was given some not so great advice from the place I purchased him and his diet was mealworms and the ocassional cricket. He would eat the mealworms but not the crickets. I then found this site and learned about other feeders, but the only other thing I could find in my area was waxworms and superworms. Well...I got rid of the mealworms and tried to up the crickets, but he would not eat so to try to add variety I tried the waxworms and superworms. He outright refused the superworms after trying a couple, but loved the waxworms...still not a fan of crickets.

So after learning more about the health value of waxworms I went to crickets only to "force" Verde into eating better, lol. He decided that crickets were awesome and would not eat anything else.

I went out on a limb and ordered some silkworms and pheonix worms to see if he just might like a little variety. They arrived this morning and needless to say he is in love with the silkworms. I put one in and some phoenix worms just to see and within minutes he was after the silkworm. So I put 2 more in and he has gone back twice to get them and some of the phoenix worms. I may have to look into ordering hornworms now.

Needless to say I am shocked...I just hope he will still eat crickets, lol.

Sorry for long post, but I just had to share Verde's feeding success. :)

that's Good news!
If you keep mixing it up (a different choice each day or even different options in the same day) he's more likely to keep eating crickets (and everything else you offer). :)

I've wondered about butterworms. Are they smaller like the phoenix? He seems to like the bigger silkworms rather than the smaller feeders.

butterworms

Butterworms are bigger but range from about 3/4" to 1 1/2" maybe. They are colorful reddish/yellowish. If my camera wasn't broken I would take a picture for you to compare them. Much bigger than phoenix worms though bigger then waxworms

You can also try dubias I've personally haven't used them but I have been reading good things about them. the thread is listed as "Dubias"

I will have to check out butterworms. I don't think I can deal with dubias, lol. Like those that are creeped out by crickets I fall under the creeped out by dubias (too close to roaches for my comfort). Thanks all for the suggestions.
