Pickle like snails!

I was planting some new little palms today near Pickles cage and noticed she was pacing back and forth trying to get out. I've never seen her trying to get out before and thought maybe she wanted to get over to the new plants. I opened her cage to see where she wanted to go and she immediately shot at a snail on a pot by her cage. So I washed the snail off and gave it to her. Yumm

Yup Rhino has eaten snails in front of me before too. They are supposed to be a good source of calcium. However If you want to feed them out you should breed them as their are quite a few parasites that make a host out of snails.

wow I would have never thought to feed a snail to a Panther with the shell. It is not too hard to digest then obviously?

Pickle's a Parson's. She had no problem smashing the shell and it was pretty hard. My Jackson's also love snails.

I know she is a Parson's and they are quite larger than the panthers. I was reading what Sandrachameleon posted about feeding them to her panther. I did not mean Pickle!

I've never tried it with my Panther. He's kinda picky anyway.

Oops Sorry, I didn't see sandrachameleons post.

Snails on the menu.

I purposely stocked the walk-in enclosures with garden snails years ago. And while I have hand fed in past, I was never really sure that the free roaming snails made it on the menu.
Got my first confirmed eating Sunday. I was cleaning at the bottom of cage when the auto misters came on. This must of triggered movement by a snail, cause the next thing I heard was crunch of snail shell. I'm glad to have a year round food item present in the cages.
Still not sure how often a snail makes the menu, but now at lease know they do.

did not cause any troubles for my animals - but I ensured only suitably sized snails were offered and not as a regular item (more of an occassional treat). Snail shell is similar, in my mind, to beetle shell, in terms of digestabiliy.
Ive stopped offering them now, as I had to cut back on the number of feeders I was breeding and snails werent the most efficient option
