Peroxide

Sorry to do this but no one is answering my posts on my thread "swollen back foot." my veileds foot is swollen from an abscess that I had a vet lance today and I got antibiotic ointment from him. But the vet simply said dab peroxide on the area he lanced every 12 hours when I need to apply the ointment. He never mentioned if I should dilute the solution or use it as it is? I tried calling the vets office but they are closed. What to do???

Ferret would you recommend peroxide? I recently read on here about peroxide and did little research. My conclusion was that peroxide is a old school wound agent that does do what it sets out to do but it also does some harm. From everything i read while it cleans it also damages the cells trying to repair at the same time.

I used the crap out of this stuff growing up. Never from my recollection had a bad experience but at the time had no idea that it did other stuff too.

Imo, im in no way as knowledgeable as your vet but from the great world of the internet and learning from it. It sounds like provodone iodine diluted would be a much better choice.

Edit: I also see that you have another thread pertaining to a swollen foot in which i think your asking now about this? Id like to see pic, is there an open wound or is it just swollen? Is he missing any toe nails?

Yep, you nailed it ataraxia. I've discussed it in several other threads as well because like you, it was a staple for my wounds when I was growing up! However it does have limited application since it damages healing cells as well as the damaged ones. I didn't mention it here because for the first few days, especially if pus was involved, hydrogen peroxide is not going to hurt because there is more debris and damage than healing at this stage. After the first few days, or once the wound appears clean dilute iodine would be a much better choice as it will clean the wound and allow it to continue healing.

i agree with you not because i am knowledgeable on the subject bc im not
but bc i have never heard nor experience peroxide being used in a hospital on a would or anything. iodine and alcohol are the only two things i can recall being used. our vet told us to use contact solution to wash our chams eye before applying her meds which i thought was strange. he didnt say what kind so i got one that said it was a contact solution and could be an eye wash. sometimes veterinarian advice really freaks me out

Ok but peroxide is indeed safe for him? And not diluted. Ok would you recommend something better/safer for this type of thing :( don't want to hurt my baby he has been through enough. I feel awful right now...

Thank you ferret I'm going to do that now and tommrow morning and then get iodine. Thank you all I'm just a wreck right now. Drive him from Orlando to Melbourne and back 5 hour journey. And I haven't eaten a thing all day. Can't eat because I feel bad and have no idea what could have caused this abscess. In shambles

At least you are an awesome chammie owner and went to vet for it immediately! Getting a jump on these types of things is the key. You are doing a great job with it. :)

Thank you. I woulda never lost my cham over a stupid infection. He deserves the best. Antibiotics on and pizza in the oven...pizza is mine :) thanks again!

peroxide is a bleaching agent is it not? I know you can clean grout, and stains, etc.. with it when diluted with water. And I had it used on my wounds as a kid as most have but only on the initial to clean the wound just once.
