People suck! Venting

Blah! I ordered a huge colony of roaches from someone. Well they came, a family manner brought them in and dropped them off in the living room. When I get home what do I see? ROACHES CRAWLING AROUND ON MY CARPET EVERYWHERE!

There was a tub with a lid that had a hole in it with plastic mesh covering the hole. Well, there was so much newspaper in the box between the screen and the top of the box that it broke. (yes, the news paper was packed extremely tight!!) normally that wouldn't have been a problem had the box been taped as every other shipment of bugs I've had. But no, only the longest edges of the box's flaps were taped together, allowing huge holes for the roaches to escape.

I contacted the seller who is now blaming fedex, who has nothing to do with it because the box arrived in perfect condition with the same amount of tape that the seller described to me. When I told him about the tape, he claimed that the roaches would have died in transit if he had taped it shut (which they wouldn't have, but if he was that worried he could have poked a few holes in the box.) he also claims that fedex caused the mesh to break, which isn't possible unless fedex opened my box and punched a hole through the screen. I've had dubias chew through the screen that he used anyways! He should have used aluminum mesh or pets screen. He claims that his 8 lbs cats sit on the tubs all the time and the mesh never breaks! Well if he's letting his cats sit on the mesh all the time the mesh is obviously going to become weaker and more worn out. (allowing the densely packed newspaper to break it.) Now he refuses to even offer a partial refund or a replacement!

Now I have a couple hundred roaches crawling around in my living room, not even half of what I ordered, and a POed family! Rant over.

Edit: maybe this belongs in the lizard lounge... Sorry!

What kind of roaches are they? I could live with Dubias escaping, but their are some other roaches that are pretty scary. Sorry to hear about your mishap.

Holy crap!!! That is awful awful AWFUL luck man!!!

He should be ashammed / I hope the collection goes alright :S

So sorry to hear about that fiasco. The only time I ever ordered any dubias they arrived in a sealed glad lock container. Which was taped also just to be safe. There were a cpl of very small air holes and they were fine. That guy that sold those to you is a moron. Dubias dont need fresh air while being shipped.

Use it as a learning experience. Hope you used the BOI before and maybe after this incident. I'm sure you have a chameleon or two free ranging, right?

Borrow some beardies from someone and set them free! There is nothing like a hungry bearded dragon for loose insects.

That really sucks! I'm pretty sure I would put the AC at a temp to freeze them and then spend the next few days in a hotel! :D

You can freeze dubia in an ice cube and they will "come back to life" once unfrozen. :D

Nu-uh, you're kidding right? Omg  I've always heard you could put your AC at like 60-50 and they'll die. Now I have no backup solution if any escape!

Sticky traps!!! Mine also seem to like orange juice. When I leave a cup out in the chameleon room after I've dropped some, they always end up drowning in it. I don't know how they get into the cup, but they do.

Nope. I experimented with some of my feeders, kept them below freezing for extended amounts of time, and all were revived after the experience.

OP: If you're OK with some free range Dubia, put out some sticky traps.

If the family is RAGE, you should find a place for your pets to stay for a week or two and get the house fumigated.
