Panthers out doors

Hi
I was chatting with a fella the other day and he ran a breeding program at a zoo and tells me that they ran thier panthers outside and only brought them in on the coldest nights, I am in southern Ca and have room in a converted aviary for a couple nicly planted 6'x6'x8' pens all I would need to do is wrap them in screen. Is anyone doing it like that or is everyone raising thier animals inside?
Thanks
Bruce

Hi Bruce,

If you keep a handful of chameleons and you have a way to bring them indoors during the more extreme conditions, it can work. The larger chameleons such as jacksonii, pardalis, calyptratus, senegalensis (not so big species) can do quite well as long as all of their needs are met.

A very large cage overgrown with plants is ideal. Set up a large enclosure with heating to kick on when temps drop below 60 degrees and it is easy enough to create protection from the dry gusty winds. Do you guys feel the Santa Anas in Conejo Valley? I assume so. You'll need a misting system too. I've got a bunch of Mist King components on the way but up until now I've used various patio misting systems.

Hi
I use Mist King on my frog room,I love it except for the vibration on the tubing,
I am building a 12'x24' frog building/ green house now, since my wife is getting fed up with the food escaping LOL,
I have a 15x 45' planted aviary that is no longer houseing birds, ( cut back on them after 20 years.)
I do get the Santa Anna's here in the fall, but I have bamboo panels on the outside of the frame of the avairy and 1/4 plexi on the walls that get full wind in the winter, it still is nice in there when its cold out and its wired for ceramice heaters the birds used in the cold, I will just have to add a T-Stat
sorry for being so long winded LOL
I would love to set up a few pairs of panthers in there, the ficas are 7' tall I have grapes growing on the ceiling from when the toucans lived there.
great for keeping crickets around LOL

Now that sounds like an excellent start for your panthers. I guess when you said "aviary," I didn't really understand you were talking about a serious AVIARY. :) I think you could fit two of my greenhouse into your aviary.

Do you have any birds now? I can't imagine what it's like to raise birds. I have one citron cockatoo and it's like having a 3-year old.

Don't people have problems housing panthers together without visual dividers?
I would think so.

I have heard of other species being kept as you are talking about but not panthers. Not that I've personally tried.

not when the area is ridiculously big.
And, accompanied by a very experienced keeper who monitor them for any subtle sign of stress and aggressions.

Bruce called the cages "pens."
