panther help!

There are so many websites and people with different information, I just wanted to ask a few more questions while setting up my enclosure!

For temperature, my understanding is that adults should stay around mid-80s for basking temps, and youngsters like it a bit hotter, closer to low 90s. In the evening those temps can drop as low as 65, so no heating element/light is needed at night. I also wondered what the lowest temp should be for the enclosure during the day, out of the basking light?

Ive also read to mist youngsters 4 times a day for different intervals between 2-4 minutes. That seems a bit excessive to me, and I was wondering if 3 times a day at a 1 minute interval was sufficient. Ive got everything running on timers, so I'm not trying to avoid misting by any means! I just want to do the right, healthiest thing for my little man! I was also wondering if people bump up misting a bit more when they notice their cham is shedding?

I also wanted to know cricket amounts for youngsters and adults. Ive read babies should be fed everyday in the morning, and adults every other day, but Ive seen all amounts from 10-30. Im also a little confused about the feeding methods, as far as using a cup or not. Is the cup just so crickets don't spread throughout the enclosure as fast, or do chams just dip into the cup for an easy meal? I read a lot that chams love to hunt, and I just worry about letting a bunch of crickets go free at feeding time. Ive read so much about how chams can get munched on and hurt at night when they are sleeping if there are leftover feeders.

Sorry if these questions are a bit monotonous, Ive read the cham care sheets on this forum, as well as a lot of other information, and its just getting a bit confusing for me. I like things black and white, and I know chameleon care has a lot of gray areas because of species, personality, enclosure type, set-up, methods, location, and personal preference! Overall I just want a beautiful, happy cham--any and all help and comments are greatly appreciated!

Hello and welcome.

All of the answers to your questions can be found here:

https://www.chameleonforums.com/care/caresheets/panther/

If you read through that, and still have questions, feel free to post them.

The care sheet here is the correct way to house and care for a panther.

Many of the other sites are just misleading and can even be detrimental to your cham.

To sum up your questions- babies need cooler temps, adults like higher.

Watering is up to you, i prefer every 2 hours from 8 am to 7 pm for 2 minutes. but as long as your cham is hydrated its fine.

babies should be fed as much as they can handle in 5 minutes.

adults will tell you when you start feeding every other day (this is becase they just dont need as much food)

many of us cup feed to control bugs from getting loose (and they do, esp when feeding babies, no fun to find crickets or worse (roaches) in your shower).

Hope this helps!

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions you dont feel like posting!

I have 4 panthers, and 5 veileds, so im pretty good at it i think. :D

hi i have a 7 month old panther chameleon and i read loads of diffrent stuff which confussed me!!!
my little dudes basking spot is 75-80.
when i mist i do a big mist in the morning before i feed him and little ones throw out the day wen i see him lookin (he does have a dripper also) and then another big spray about 8 so it has time to dry up before lights out.
when i feed mine i put 2 in at a time and that way he eats one but is also hunting and watchin where the other is going once he has eat them i put more in..i feed mine a mixture of diffrent feeders (crickets, loctus, roaches) in the morning after i have misted, he eats 5-6 and more if i let him but i dont :) he is 7 months old.
i have found with cup feeding there are advantages and disadvantages
ADVANTAGES- U CAN MONITOR HOW MUCH YOUR CHAM IS EATING AND WHAT
DISAVANTAGES- THEY ARENT HUNTING FOR THEIR FOOD AND KEEPIN THEIR MIND ACTIVE
but everyone is diffrent...hope i have helped in some way :)

This comes up a lot around here.

Probably, a combo of hand, cup, and free hunting feeding methods work best.

I think it's very important to hand feed when taming a new cham.

So, I always hand feed worms and sometimes roaches. Cup feed the cricks, or dump them in the home-made cricket feeder (AKA: Sunny D death trap).

Also, BB flys are a great way to keep your chams fit.

no temp is right for my chameleon coz he isnt under it all the time so he is obviously happy at 75-80 :)
yeh handfeedin is good mine is really friendly now x
