Hi I have a Panther Chameleon , We have had him in the family for about 4 to 5yrs. Just yesterday I noticed somthing coming out of his rectom. I went to the pet store they told me to soak him in warm suger water I did it went in but in the middle of the night he had a bowl movment and now it is out again will it ever be normal again? I am soaking him again and spraying him with a shed spray to help it go back in? What can I do?

Post a picture! It could be a hemipenal prolapse. If you can't get it to go back in you are going to have to take him to the vet.

I copied and pasted this from another website. I think it is a hemipenal prolapse because I saw a picture of one before and it looks like it. Hopefully someone else can identify it for sure. the pic is not the best and I am not an expert on this but trying to help Please read below:

There are several things that can prolapse from a chameleon. Being that you have a male, it could be a hemipenal prolapse. Common to both male and female is a cloacal prolapse. If it is a hemipene that is showing and it returns back inside on its own and stays there then there isn't too much to worry about unless it continues to return over and over.

A cloacal prolapse is effectively turning their "insides out". If it stays that way for more than a few minutes then you have a potential life threatening situation. If this is the case, you can use products like K-Y jelly to keep it moist while you are getting in touch with a qualified exotic vet to make an appointment. You can also carefully attempt to return the tissue back inside, tape the vent shut and then head to the vet's office. DON'T let the tissue dry-out. Necrosis can quickly set-in with living, internal tissue that has been allowed to dry. You can do a search on www.chameleonforums.com to see photos of prolapses to compare to what you are seeing.

I dont have $$$ for a vet. I went to the pet store they told me kind of what to do .. I dont know what to do it does look better today then yesterday?

Go into the search bar above and type in prolapse. It will take you to a page of threads with pictures and you can determine what type of prolapse it is. If it does not go back in then you have NO choice but to get your animal to a vet. Borrow money if you have to but you cannot leave him like that!

Hopefully someone else can answer what exactly it is for you. I am not 100% sure and do not want to give you wrong info. Just saying if it is a prolapse then you need to get the animal to a vet. Try going on the threads and look at some other pictures.

The pictures are not that great, but it appears to be an intestinal prolapse. He needs a vet, it can be life threatening if not dealt with quickly. Until you can get him to a vet, the area needs to be kept moist. Apply KY jelly to the area. Call a vet and get him help ASAP.

I agree. He has got to have a vet ASAP.

Hes all better

So I did everything that everyone told me to do. I soaked him in surger water several times in a day. keep putting ky jelly on his bum. Gave him lots of water and lots of privicy. We put an ace bandage around his but to hold everything in. got up this morning and the bandage was off and he looks normual.. He seams ok .. Thanks to everyone who helped.:)

I would be concerned still since this is a recurring thing... Be careful and keep an eye on him.

If it happens again TAKE HIM TO THE VET.
