1 year old panther chameleon, had it for about 6 months. I always thought it was a female but as it gets older I’m leaning more toward male. I would like some confirmation please I’m going crazy.

Little male but for a year old he is very underweight. Its why he is not showing his color to the full potential. You can tell by how thin the limbs are and how sunk in the top of his casque is.

How much is he eating, how often, and what types of insects?

Have you gotten a fecal test run to rule out a parasite load? This can be a very common cause of a very underweight cham.

I was told he was a female when I first bought him. I was told to feed about 2-3 bugs every other day. I started out with crickets and super worms, then at about 8 months I switched almost exclusively to dubia roaches and hornworms.

I have not gotten a fecal test, however, his poop and urate look quite healthy.

I always hand fed him and today I fed him about 4 roaches. I definitely feel like I need to increase the diet now after finding out he’s a male.

If you have any tips on where to go for fecal testing or any feeding suggestions I am open to everything I love my little guy. I’m thinking of changing his name to Pascal.

I hate to tell you this but you were very miss informed. :( The person you got him from had no clue... Babies can take down easily 2 dozen insects a day. This can be the case up to a year old where we then take them to every other day 3-5 feeders. This reduction is to maintain weight so they do not become obese. Once they get to the year mark they are done with all their major growth spurts.

I want you to go ahead and increase him to a dozen insects every morning for the next month. You should see him start to fill out. Get some silkworms and waxworms these are a good protein and fat source to fatten him up. Keep replying to this thread. Do not start a new one for this or I will not be tagged in it. Post weekly pictures so I can track and see how he is doing with the weight gain then we can evaluate as we go.

He may not have a parasite load. It could just be lack of food intake. However to get a fecal tested you would find a vet near you that works with reptiles that you can drop off a fresh fecal sample to.

Take a look at these albums of some of @jannb male Panthers. This is what a healthy adult male physically should look like from baby to adult. https://www.chameleonforums.com/media/albums/wilson-from-baby-until-adult.6972/

Ask questions as you are learning here in the forum. But for his weight stick to this thread.

He is super active so I’m ruling the parasites out as well. I’m going ASAP to buy some in the morning because he already ate 4 significantly large dubias today. Seeing those Chameleons really puts into perspective how much he should be eating. His more vivid colors only started coming out maybe 1 or 2 months ago.

I will be posting Pascal every Monday for the next month to document the progress. If I have any other unrelated questions I’ll make other threads, but for this one I’ll post more about his growth and how the feeding is going.

Thank you so much for letting me know I had a hunch because I didn’t think he looked very feminine compared to other females I was recently seeing. I hope this doesn’t have any long-term health issues because I haven’t seen anything else odd with him other than his size.

Perfect, sounds good. There are a lot of wonderful people here that can help you with new threads. I would like to stick with this one with you though to see how he progresses. So I appreciate you continue to update this one.
