Hey all, after what ive heard about Johnstonii (and the fact the ad is gone) ive decided to get an oustalets from chameleon company, im going cham shopping soon so i just had a few questions about them.

The one im getting will be 8 in, is a 65 gal reptarium too big?

I knew someone in FL who kept their Oustalets outside all year (except extreme hot or cold temps) Is this ok, if i provide shade and a place for sun?

any other tips or advice on oustalets would really help, thanks guys!

Be prepared to feed it A LOT! They are not only proportionately large chameleons but also have quite large appetites compared to their size. Otherwise, I think your choice is going to reward you for many years. Oustalet's, especially cb or ch ones, are quite hardy. They can take very warm temperatures as well as drops to or slightly below freezing (not recommended, but just sayin') if allowed to warm back up the next day. Keep it like you would a panther or veiled and you're golden. Congrats on your new guy. Good choice! :D

Thanks! ill post pics as soon as i get him, I have veilds and panthers so im good on care, and it IS ok to keep him outside right? (in a screened in area)

I wouldn't worry about it. I've heard some say it gets too humid for them outside in FL but they do come from coastal areas in Madagascar where panthers occur also. Humidity there is frequently in the 85-100% range. It's tough to say what region of Madagascar those originated from but personally I wouldn't worry about the humidity if there's air movement through the cage.

OK, and one last question, is a 65 gal reptarium too large, i figured id just get a cage large enough for him to stay in his whole life, i know it may be big now but i know the "free range rule" is 7 in or larger, so i figured it would be ok.

I keep both my Oustalets outside on my covered lanai for most of the year. Think large cages! These guys get BIG! And as Kent said-they eat alot of food-and then poop like a cat! I don't use heat lamps in the summer, but always have UVB since the lanai is covered. I occasionally move them poolside for some sun. Coastal Florida and Coastal Maddy are very much alike. I also keep my WC Nosy out with the Ousties.

That will be fine but think future 24X24X48 or larger!

The 260 gallon is 29X29X72"-that will be too big for a baby. Mine did not really start getting big until they were 9 months to a year. I would start with the 65 gallon and move up when the little guy is big enough.

That sounds good. Figure an adult male will be at least 18 inches by the time he's a little over a year old. The bigger the cage, definitely the better.

Ok thanks Juli, and im getting a male.

So, skipping the whole gallons thing what size cage would i use for an 8 in oustalet

I think an 8 inch male would be fine in a cage that big. He will definitely grow into it, and the cb babies I had all seemed to grow to adult size quite quickly. You might want to set up feeding stations if he has any trouble finding food, but I've always thought of Ousties to be one of the most aggressive feeders, chasing down as many bugs as they can get whether they're loose in the cage or in a feeding bowl.
