One egg dropped

Hi all

I have a panther chameleon that was succesfully mated with our male panther 4wks and 1 day ago she has been off her food for a while (normal)drinking plenty for the last 2 weeks she has had a laying box in 15"deep with a mix of coco fibre and vermiculite damp enough to hold shape she has been digging lots of holes then covering them up she is getting bigger by the day she looks like a bag of marbles bless her

Tonight I went up to check on her (she is in our bedroom so she gets as little disturbance as possible ) and there she was in her branches but on the floor was one solitary perfectly formed beautiful egg


My question is why the floor she digs and digs in her box all day ( I see her but she can't see me )

Does this mean she is close to dropping the rest ???

This is her first clutch (and mine ) how will she know what to do ??

They just know what to do.

Let's hope that she is going to lay them soon. Its odd that she is filling in the holes. (Do you mean accidentally as she is digging others or intentionally filling them in?)

No she digs them fills them in then starts another one She is digging again now I am tring to leave her alone, she can't see me when I check on her but when should I worry about her getting eggbound

27 days isn't too long. I had 2 females that laid at 31 and 32 days. She is not happy with her hole or something about the dirt. What is the laying medium? Is your container opaque?

It is a mix of vermiculite and coco fibre / forest substrate it is nice and moist will hold the holes was thinking of changing it and/or mixing some play sand in

It is in a 15" deep bucket not see through it is blue

She is drinking fine and after I had given her a drink out if the pipette last night that was when she laid the egg

I just want her to be ok we lost a 7month old cham because of a birth defect a couple of months ago and I was devastated so I think I am just really paranoid

I would try playsand. Usually vermiculite is used for the gestation box, but I am not familiar with a mix called forest substrate. Most chams that I have read about prefer clean dirt or playsand. I like the sand because your cham doesn't get black from the dirt and really holds together well. Think of those sand castles people make!

I bought a bag of playsand at Walmart and it cost me 3 something. Pretty cheap.

I live in the uk and am very jealous that in america they have lots of great products for reps especially the mesh housing I may have to start importing them do you know any good sites that will ship to the uk ?

Might not need the playsand just been up to check on her and panicked couldn't find her anywhere it is quite hard to look closely without being seen but in the end I saw her or should i say the end of her nose she had backed into her hole and only her nose and eyes were showing going to leave her for a few more hours and check on her again

Piglet by mesh housing do you mean a flexarium? I live in Liverpool and the breeder i got my cham from provided me with one plus all the equipment and advice and I could ever need to look after him so if you look around Im sure you will find everything you need over here

I hate flexariums so does my cham I got a setup with my female that is fab it has doors that open and everything it is like an exoterra but made of mesh and that was imported from America they also seem to have cheaper accessories we seem to get charged over the odds

Like mesh as in made out of metal? Sounds interesting. My cham seems happy enough. He`hasnt given me any problems as of yet (fingers crossed). Stuff really is hard to get over here, were not known as "rip off britain" for nothing lol

My friend imports things from Japan so I am sure he will be able to get stuff from America

I have to keep in mind they may not be viable as it is her first clutch but fingers crossed

How long before you can tell if they are viable ??

If they are fertile they will look whiter and more opaque and be slightly larger than the infertile ones. The infertile ones will be more yellow and about the size of one of those fancy jelly beans. Infertile ones will mold/rot/shrivel in a few days...whereas fertile ones shouldn't.

What temperature are you incubating them at?

Be sure to feed your female well for a couple of days and then cut her back to her regular diet.

The incubator is at a steady 22c is this right as all the articles I read said 21-24 so I sort of went in the middle I have them in small tubs on vermiculite damp but not wet,lids on but with small vent holes to keep in the moisture I plan to do an air exchange once a week

I am also going to leave asmall cup of water in the incubator to be on the safe side I don't want them to dry out but was told by keeping the lids on this cuts down the chance

I have put a couple of locusts in for her with some vitamins on and will give her more tomorrow with calcium she has had a good drink and is now having a well earned rest.
She doesn't look as thin as I expected though

Well 3 days now and already I am impatient

They are still all pearly white as they were so I am taking this as a good sign

To be honest I will be happy if just 1 is fertile
