Old age and eyes.

Hi! My name is Emily. I have a 3 to 4 year old veiled chameleon. She has recently started to act much differently than normal.

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - Veiled Chameleon, Femae, I have owned her for 3-4 years, she was an adolescent when I bought her, so I'm guessing she is 4 years old.
Handling - Only to take her out of her cage about once a week, she’s not normal, she doesn’t care about being handled and likes being out of her cage.
Feeding - Large crickets. About 6/7 every 2 or 3 days.
Supplements - Gutload crickets and dust with repti calcium and a multivitamin.
Watering - I mist her about 4 times a day and put one water bottle worth of water in her dripper 2 or 3 times a day. She usually drinks for about 2 minutes every day.
Fecal Description - Solid black poop and white urea.
History - Has never had any issues at all. She has fallen a few times in her life but it has never affected her at all.
Current Problem - I believe she is just getting old but she’s been slowing down. She is also closing her eyes a lot and not moving around her cage as much. She can still see and she still eats and drinks. I’ve never had any issues with her until a day or 2 ago. She also just rubbed her eye against her feed bowl after eating; which she has never done that I know of until just now.

Welcome to the forums! Where do you live? I might be able to recommend a good chameleon vet. I would take her in for a good check up with an experienced chameleon vet. She may have an infection in her eyes.

Hi! I live in a small town called Lapeer located in Michigan. There doesn’t seem to be any reptile vets within 1 hour of me and I don’t exactly have the money to take her to the vet due to covid. I have researched a bit and most people recommend giving Vitamin A? She has never gotten it in her supplements as I didn’t know they needed it. She is also a month or 2 past due for a new UVB bulb and I am going to get her a new one tomorrow. I also gave her a shower tonight and she turned really bright afterwards.

If it is an infection wouldn’t she likely have swelling or pus? Her eyes look totally normal other than that she is closing them more often than usual. No cloudiness, no green goop, no swelling. Just her normal eyes. She will open them up and look around which is why I’m thinking she’s just getting old. She’s still eating and drinking as well.

I don't know what's causing her problem. It could b a number of things. I just said that if it's an infection vitamin A won't cure it.

3 or 4 isn't old for a female veiled. They can live to be over 7 easily.

UPDATE: She has healed 100% and is back to normal. Idk what it was, definitely wasn’t an infection. I replaced her UVB bulb and gave her a different type of basking light. Also started giving Vit A. She has opened her eyes and is acting her normal self. Eating crickets and is as happy as ever.
