Ohio H.B. 352 (Banning of exotic pets)

That little mishaps last week with the Irresponsible owner of them big animals definitely did not help this one bit.

Even though this has been in the process for a long time, this past incident just makes exotic pets and owners in Ohio look bad.

I'm in Canada and really know nothing other than this new bill is a reaction to the needless tragedy that occurred last week. There is an obvious need for some type of control over who gets to keep what. If some hillbilly American thinks it's his right to keep lions tigers & bears at his farm then release them into the area before offing himself... well, you need the law. If I could, I would vote YES!! These idiots make all exotic pet owners look bad.

A man who owned lots of exotic animals for years supposedly released them and committed suicide at his ranch. In hand all the animals which consisted of lions, tigers, and yes bears and plenty other fierce and scary animals. Authorities in Ohio decided to mass murder the animals with assault rifles instead of taking chances and sedating and properly taking control of the situation. At the end of the day there were lines of slaughtered tigers and other awesome animals.

he had permits however NEVER sould have been granted them..

he had 12-14 prior counts of animal abuse and he is also a convicted felon

This law is was in process many years before last week, Signed actually by the last governor of Ohio. A lot of info on Fauna since I can't quite remember that exact details.

This law will abolish crocs, snakes and a lot of species people in Ohio make a living off of.

I can also buy assault rifles, anywhere in Ohio I think that is more dangerous than a venomous snake to be honest.

Wasn't the lady who had her face & hands ripped off by her friends "pet" monkey from Ohio?

doh!

That wouldn't surprise me, but that's just ironic too. Or maybe animals get angry in Ohio. :D

heres last week story.

I haven't even read but parts of it. Makes me

Im current with Tiger conservation and I get emails weekly from other countries regarding tigers and other big cats. So the 18 tigers murdered really doesn't sit well with me at all.

The fact that this idiot was even able to acquire Bengal tigers considering their world status is the part that I'm most outraged by...wouldn't have happened if people weren't stupid enough to sell giant extremely dangerous animals to people stupid enough to think they can make them pets.

This bill is just another public overreaction to a tragedy without thinking it through.

This "Zanesville, Ohio" incident happened a little over an hour north and a little west of where I live. This guy (Terry Thompson) had just been released three weeks ago from a federal prison term for a felony posession of a firearm. His wife was divorcing (or at least leaving) him. I was told that some of the animals that was in his care actually belonged to "The Wilds", which is a game preserve VERY close to his home. I believe that he "wintered" the animals that couldn't take the real cold weather.

None-the-less.......this whole incident took place with very little over an hour until it would have been totally dark. I might be in the "minority" here by saying this.......BUT......I am entitled to my opinion. If these animals, some of which could travel MANY miles during the 12 hours of darkness that was about to begin, were released by an obviously troubled man in YOUR vicinity which was rural......but close to a city the size of Zanesville, Ohio. WHAT would you have done ???? Let them live their lives freely.......risking human life and casualty in the process ???? If you were the person that was ON THE SCENE and had any responsibility about the safety and well-being of the citizens that lived in YOUR jurisdiction.......and you had to make a decision QUICKLY, just what the hell would you have done ???

There wasn't time to get someone there with enough tranquilizer guns and drugs to put them all under sedation. As a matter of fact, they did tranquilize a tiger and it went balistic on them and they ended up having to shoot it anyways. Besides........the last time I checked they didn't have night vision scopes on ANY of their tranquilizing guns........so time was running out.

The problem was/is.......that the state of Ohio has been so lax in WHO can purchase and own these types of exotic animals with little to NO regulation on the conditions that they were being kept in. Sooooooooooooooooo, now they are gonna go WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY beyond with regulation to "try" and make up for THEIR mistakes. This made national news and put the spotlight on the VERY legislature that ALLOWED this to happen in the first place.

I'm not even gonna try and "guess" what was going through this individuals mind when "HE" made the decision to release these animals into the southeastern Ohio area. As I said.........he was obviously a "troubled man". The media does, and will continue to.........give these people the "spotlight" that so many of them seek. Whether he intended to go down as being made into a "main news story" or not........thats the way it worked out. These legislative people are now in the so called........"Hot Seat". They are gonna cover their asses.........and don't care WHO they have to step on to do it.

OVERKILL...........yes........a senseless crime directed at humanity.....yes. A shame that these beautiful animals death warrants were signed by a man that LEGALLY posessed them...........YES.

It's easy to sit behind a computer and say "what should" have been done, but quite a different thing to have it THRUST into being a reality and faced with making a decision that could very possibly save more than one human life. Sherriff, Matt Lutz........made the correct decision in my opinion, and "Jungle Jack Hanna", from the Columbus Zoo.........where the animals that were able to be captured were sent to........even said that there was NO OTHER decision that could have been made.

Terry Thompson, for whatever reason.........made the decision to turn these animals loose. It was a very selfish, unfortunate decision to make for the animals that he was supposed to care so much about.

You're absolutely right Winterhawk. There were very few options for the authorities to react to a terrible situation like this with very limited time before people started getting hurt. Their responsibility is to protect people and that is what they did. No one was prepared for something like this and very few animal authorities even have tranquilizer guns or the drugs strong enough to safely take these animals down. It would have taken time to get them there to begin with, and in the meantime people could have easily been killed by scared wild animals following their instincts. Unfortunately the animals suffered the price of human stupidity with their lives. The logical reaction is to limit the availability of these animals, but people not involved in the field (legislators) think banning everything is the solution.

If it was a huge marijuana field they would have all the night vision and everything they needed. Sorry the city was not prepared to deal with such a situation and choked under pressure. They handled it as quick as possible and did not care of the outcome. Yes tranquilizers are not hard to access and yes the 1st amount they used did not work since It was a police officer doing it and not someone trained to tranquilizer a tiger. Regardless what has been done is done. You can't sit there and justify something because you are faced with fear of what ifs. The city should have animals they can't humanly contain or deal with in such given situations. IF you know you have 50 tigers, in your city you might want to have a plan to deal with it. I hope the plan wasn't 50 calibre always.

The point is this decision may have been needed at the time, but it shouldn't have came to this. In general. I guess thats why laws like the above are put into legislation. Which some are much needed.

What do you expect though police shoot pet dogs over here any chance they get.

If it was a huge marijuana field they would have all the night vision and everything they needed.

But the marijuana won't suddenly run off and kill people...that is the kind of situation the police can prepare for over time and gather resources knowing it's not going anywhere. Just regular old vets are not trained with tranquilizer guns at all, and the drugs they keep on hand aren't strong enough for big cats and bears. Pretty much only zoos have that kind of stuff available and have the training to use it safely. There just wasn't time to call them in. I wish there would have been. The pictures make me physically ill. This was a true tragedy. And I agree, a better plan should have been in place. And like you said, cops usually react in the worst way possible...

Banning EVERYTHING is NOT the solution !!! The problem's that existed here, just below the surface for many years now, just got brought to the TOP of the heap. Now.........the "powers that be" will do what "they" think gives them "blanket coverage" to prevent this happening again in the future. They are "elected officials"........if only people would remember that on election day.

I can't vote in Ohio.........but there are many that can, that don't. I haven't missed a chance since I turned 18. I might only be one voice on election day, but I have my say. What is a sad part of that is that I can't remember when I actually made MY choices on election day, that it didn't mean picking the "lesser of the evils".

For what it's worth........WE (my wife and I) consider ourselves "cat lovers" and my wife's absolute favorite is and always has been the tiger.

BUT...........we are smart enough to know that WE can't own one and that people that think they are "smart enough" to own them, ought to be regulated a LOT better than they are. Which does NOT mean blanketing them with a TOTAL regulatory bill........because of their past failure to assure that animals that have the capability to kill and consume humans as part of their diet are kept in satisfactory conditions and ONLY by people that can prove themselves as having the ability to do so.

don't you think they had plenty of time though. This should not be a spur of the moment thing. I mean how long have these animals lived there. I know its been longer than 3 months. So I think they had plenty of time to have the proper dosages on hand with means of locating the animals. If not then they should not be allowed around as they are a danger. I know we don't know the answers because these aren't our decisions we are speculating. I just feel our laws let these animals die. Who knows their fate anyways I just feel we should do more to deter such an outcome. Like prevented some crazy in having all these in the first place i find insane.

Thats the point they should have strong enough meds in radius of where these animals are held. Not to mention should be easily accessible within a certain radius. No ifs ands or buts about it. Thats being responsible. Yes a bullet works too.
