nursing a poorly hamster

Nibbler my hammy is sick :( I'm keeping under my top to keep him warm & giving him water every hour. My vet is reasonably hopeful. Thank god i checked on him when i did. looks like I'm pulling a nightshift. hope he gets better, his brother would be lonely without him

Thanks :)

He's eating now & he bit me quite hard, which is normal Nibbler behaviour. but when tries to walk, he ends up rolling over on his back & he's so weak. I'm wondering if he's got something more than wet tail. I'll see how he is tomorrow after another dose of baytril. It might just be that he's been too weak to eat up until now & some millet will perk him up.

It's pretty late & I'd like to go to bed, but he hasn't got a water bottle where I've put him, so I'm staying up to give him water every few hours & to top-up his hot water bottle.

Hope Nibbler gets better soon! Its a great sign that he's eating a bit! Best of luck and I hope for great news tomorrow!!!

finger crossed. the vet said he was a bit old to get wet tail, apparently it mostly happens to babies in a new home, but that's what it looks like. What's weird is he has a wound on his foot too & I have no idea how that happened. I'm just hoping it's not neurological- if he can walk without falling over tomorrow, I'll feel better. I'm giving him until late afternoon to make a turn-around, if he doesn't it may be kinder to put him down.

It's funny how you can get so attached to a tiny ball of fur...

RIP Nibbler, letting go was the best thing you could have done. No more suffering. Bite some people in hammy heaven for me :(

& shame on my so-called friend who tried to make a joke of it. I'm sick of him bashing me for owning & actually caring about my animals.

Aww, I'm so sorry :( RIP Nibbler, may there be bunches of wheels for you to run on in heaven

I'm sorry bout your friend too...smack him, that's what I do :)
You're not alone in actually caring :) I cried when my fish died...I had him for 24 hours..I'm a sap.

Aww! RIP Nibbler!

Try not to pay any attention to that jerk that just doesn't understand. I think more people understand that not. I only had my baby cham for 10 days but I sobbed and sobbed when he died. You care for them and love them. It's natural to feel sad when they are sick or die.

Thanks.

Unfortunately I gave my friend the sharp end of my tongue- he chose the wrong time to tease me, again.

Nibbler is buried under the apple tree in my garden. Squeaks, his brother, has a runny tummy so I'm giving him baytril and hoping he doesn't go the same way

I think I stopped the anti-biotics too soon & Squeaks is looking peeky again. I'm restarting the anti-biotics and I think I'll keep them going for 10 days. Fingers crossed for my little guy

Never stop the antibiotics mid way through the treatment. Even if he appears better, complete the dosing as the vet prescribed.

The vet didn't give me a prescription as such, I told her I had some baytril at home & just told me to give him a drop every day. but I know I should have kept it up for longer

The good new is he's still eating, drinking & running around. Basically, I put him a container while I cleaned the cage today & when I went to put him back there was a runny, off-colour stool in the container & he had gotten wet, although I didn't put any tissue or saw dust in the container as usual so that might be why. He had a good sand bath & that cleaned him right up.

I'll definitely continue with the meds for 10 days.

Squeaks is doing good. Most droppings are solid, colour is normal & he's keeping clean. Will keep going with anti-biotics going, I think it's looking good for him :)
