Not sure about keeping him now...

So I've had Hermes for about 2 months now and I'm starting to realize how much dedication these guys need, and how much money will be spent on various things throughout his life. As much research as I've done on chameleons, I didn't really get what it was all about until now. I love the little guy, but I'm just not sure if I can dedicate enough time to take care of him properly. So, I think it may be best if I found him another home now. But I'm so torn about the decision! Any advice?

For both you and him do it sooner rather than later. If you have doubts about the time, money & commitment you should rehome him. jmo

I think if you dont want the responsibility or the effort required to properly care for a cham then you ought to find it the best home possible asap. That doesnt mean try and sell him either. Find someone on this forum who wants him and has cham experience. Find him a caring forever home now.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking will happen.

Just to say - its not responsibility or effort, its mainly time and money that's making me think I won't be caring for him as well as someone else could. I'd gladly give him all I can, its just that I don't have much to give right now. Which I guess does go back to responsibility after all.

Where are you located? Maybe someone near you could see that and contact you about him.

These guys are expensive to keep and they do require time, so if you are being honest with yourself and realizing that you can't give him the life he deserves then that's great. I commend you for realizing that now instead of later down the road where you might have neglected him from lack of attention or funds. There are hundreds of people on this forum that are trustworthy and absolutely obsessed with chameleons, so it's an excellent idea to look for someone here who can take him.

I'm in upstate SC. Not a very poppin' place for reptiles, so finding someone local to take him might be a bit of a challenge.

Edit: In regards to selling him, I would like to pursue that option first. I paid $335 for the guy, so I would like something back on that. Of course, if it came to where I just absolutely couldn't care for him properly, that would change. (Right now I'm looking towards the future. I'm perfectly capable of caring for him and providing him with everything he needs at the moment. I'm just not sure how true this will be a few months - or even a year - from now.)

Put him in the classifieds and make the new keeper pay shipping costs. If they are exp in chams they should jump at the chance to grab a nice male panther for the cost of shiping. Then you could sell his cage and other supplies to recoup some of your costs. jmo

I would sell him for a reasonable price instead of giving him away, unless you know who you're giving him to. Otherwise you have no way to know if they'll just turn around and sell him again.

With summer here and the hot temps, please do research on "how to" ship. You will need an insulated box and cold packs. It's great to see someone honest and doing the right thing.

I'll definitely have to research a bit on this; I haven't shipped a reptile before. Where would I get these?

Edit: Have him posted in the classifieds now.

Any pack and mail store should have the box and you can pick up cold packs at Wal Mart. Make sure though you don't sit the cham on top of the ice pack. You will need to securely tape it to the top and I would use two. The other thing to think about is you need him to be secure in the box so he doesn't bounce around. I'm sure you could pm Jannb to get better instructions.
