Nosy Be Chameleon Eyes Swollen

Musky

My Nosy Be Chameleon has some sort of strange swelling around his eyes. He was fine when I left the house this morning, I fed him 4 large crickets. When I returned home I immediately noticed his eyes were quite puffy. I thought he was dehydrated, I offered him water (which he drank) and 3 more crickets (also ate the crickets). The swelling went down some but it is still sorta noticable. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Hey,

Welcome to the forums.

You can try misting for a couple of minutes, usually they will clean out their eyes when being misted. That should work.

The misting seems to cause more swelling. But KatCham i read you thread about Simba and noticed the vines in his cage are similar to the ones you used to have before you switched them. I also have another type of vine in his cage which is more like a hard foam (See pics below). He is rubbing his face against the vines as I type this. He shedded 2 weeks ago so he can not be rubbing due to shedding. I was also wondering if it could be the mister I use REPTISAFE water conditioner (2 drops per 8 oz). Could that be causing the problem?

I couldn't say for sure if it is the vines causing the eye issue or the mister.

He could be rubbing his eyes on the vines because they are irritated inside, but if he's doing it on the 'gritty' vines, it won't do him any good.

All I know is that when Simba had his eye issue, someone told me about the vines causing a prob with their cham. I then actually saw bits of the coating on Simba so I decided to remove them. HOWEVER, when he was misted it did seem to make things worse.

If it was me, I'd remove those vines AND sterilise your mister. That way, you cover all bases. Then see if his eyes improve.

I'm not sure if the antibiotic drops from my vets made any difference but if ur chams eyes are still swollen after doing the above, then can't hurt to get some meds to treat any infection???

Hope you get him sorted.

I'm no expert but he looks a tad dehydrated to me. Warm water mist with CLEAN RO or DISTILLED water wouldn't be a bad idea.

If you base this on the 2nd pic, it's the excess skin that's making him look like that. Eyes balloon up then when the swelling goes down, they are left with the loose skin.

I'd be removing the vines, sterilising the mister AND giving cham a good warm misting after that to make sure everything clean and so he can clean his eyes out himself (but in clean grit free environment)

Hope that make sense :)

I have a warm humidifier running on him right now. Im going to go clean out his mister right now and try to get him new vines. I will be going to get new vines either tonight or tomrrow.

Ok, I got a vet apt on Monday for him. I was recomended by a local pet store they said the vet specializes in mostly chameleons and other exotic reptiles. I have noticed his eyes swell up when he is facing in a downward position. So I am wondering if it could be something with blood rushing to the head. He seems to be acting like his normal self (moving around and being active) but his hunger has gone down some and is drinking less than normal. Hopefuly the vet will be able to tell me whats going on.
