hi all this is my first post on this forum so bear with me lol, ive had other reps inc water dragons crested geckos, leopard geckos and ackies so im not getting my first rep, im now looking to get my first cham soon and want to know what species is best to start not going by temprement as every rep is different personality, and just any tips really you guys can reccomend, thanks in advance :)

The easiest are velid and panther and male panthers are usually well tempered but as long as you do your research jacksons, senegal and quad chams arnt to difficult either

The most common chameleons to start with for new chameleon keepers are veileds and panther chameleons. Veileds and Panthers tend to be the hardiest species. They require lower humidity as compared with other chams and also have reasonable temperature needs for most climates.

Most people recommend Veileds as a first chameleon as they are cheaper than Panthers. Veileds generally cost around 50-100 dollars and panthers cost 150-400 dollars depending on the locale and bloodlines.

Look up care sheets on this forum because a care sheet from almost any reptile store is bound to contain false and or misleading information for a new keeper!!

I hope some of the information I provided is helpful!!

thankyou for the replys guys, im in the uk so prices will be different, I like the look of yemen with the big casque but heard they can be very deffensive, so dont know, will have a lok at care sheets, ive got a xl reptibreeze and as a question should I use a mvb or spot bulb and uv strip with reflector? thanks again fpr your replies :)

The general consensus on this website is to use a linear fluorescence bulb (the regular tube style fluorescent light) for uvb (reptisun 5.0 recommended) and a regular house bulb for heat (wattage depends on temperature needs of your cage/cham).

I had heard yemens were more defensive when I was looking into purchasing my cham as well, however since I joined this forum, some of the friendliest chams out there appear to be yemens! If you look up forum member jannb, she has what looks to be some of the friendliest chams out there and they are yemens! Each animal has its personality but the breeder also probably plays a role in how tollerable a cham will be with handling!!

thanks, I guess it also comes down to the owner aswell, ie daily interaction hand feeding letting them come to you rather than grabbing them

Oh yes, it definitely does. However some people mention having chams that become.furious at the sight of them Lol. There are many factors involved in how friendly your cham will be.

Welcome to the addiction. Chams make great pets if you really follow the rules of husbandry. They have very specific needs and are not as flexible as beardies or others. So follow the few requirements on lighting humidity and supplementation for any Cham you will get. In terms of character I am afraid it is not really up to the keeper but to the Cham. Iguanas are difficult but can be tamed. But my experience is that if you have a nasty Cham you might better just enjoy its beauty and not handle it at all.

thankyou for the welcome :) your blog was realy helpful, I undersyand from research chams like routine, also when you said about saving for vet bills are these very prone to illness? im gonna get a male as ive heard its easier as im just getting one,

I try to take the very best care possible of my pets and stuff still happens. It's very important to find a good chameleon vet within driving distance. Males have all the same problems as females except the egg laying ones.

yea where I am there arnt many the nearest is 20 miles away, I do like to be able to hold my pets but if it doesnt like it I will have to just treat it like a fish as in a look but dont touch, but I will still try for a while before giving up, but am am going to do lots of research before deciding if a cham is right for me, care wise I can do everything incliding routine and spraying several times, just gotta be sure

My chameleon vet is 2 hours away. All my chams are very friendly. I treat them with allot of love and respect.

I treat mine the same, ive been lucky the fact that ive never been bitten but then ive always been one to either scoop them up gently or let them come yo me, ive seen some people quite rough then moan they get bitten and I just think u twat lol scuse my fench, but chameleons are going to be a whole new ball game to me and I honestly cant wait :) every bit of spare time I get at the minute im reading watching care videos, everyone does it different just gotta figure my way, I wont be looking to buy one for about 2 months so pkenty of time to research and gather all equipment :)

Im in MD, not that far from you!

Ask as many questions as you need to.

better to ask a silly question, then not ask and spend your time worrying about it.

trust me, you'll spend enough time worrying about everything your cham does, that there wont be time to worry about much else. ;)
