I just recently purchased my first chameleon and wanted to do a quick post to make sure everything is right. I have a glass cage right now with a door in the front until he getts a little bigger, then ill get him a larger screen cage. Temp is 95 at the basking spot. I dont have a dripper set up yet so i just mist the cage 2 or 3 times a day. Hes usually very active but ive been catching him sleeping during the day. I also dont think hes as interested in food as he should be. I give him 2 or 3 large crickets a day. Ive tryed putting them in a small cup but i think hed rather hunt. I believe hes 2 or 3 months old hes about 3 inches from head to base of tail. Thanks for any info. Trying to make sure hes happy and healthy.

If he's that young, you should probably drop the basking spot down to mid-80's and he shouldn't be getting large crix. Try 1/4 to 1/2 inch and that might spark his interest. Sleeping during the day is not good. Do you have a UVB light?

Oh, how recent is recent?? He might just be settling in and that's why he isn't eating as much. But seriously, try smaller crickets and he should be eating 10 or so a day...

Ive had him for about 2 weeks and ive seen him sleeping twice in the last couple days. Im going to get some smaller crickets this weekend hopefully that helps. Ive got a basking light that supposed to put out uva and uvb. Cant remember the name of it right now. Got it from petsmart. Hes also ver skidish but ive read thats normal. He tollerates handles pretty well but wont eat unless im across the room.

Thanks for the how to ask guidlines!

vieled,male, i believe around 2 or 3 months. i've had him for 2 weeks.
I've handles him about 5 times. once for cleaning the cage.
He only eats about 3 large crickets a day but i will be getting smaller ones this weekend. i've given my feeders slices of carrot, lettuce, and potato. I have been giving him reptocal calcium and D3.(adviced by the lady at the pet store) but i just bought calcium, calcium plus D3, and multivitamins from exo terra. I mist the cage at least twice a day and just installed a dripper today. He is normally a light green with a couple small yellow stripes. Don't think he has been tested for parasites.

Cage glass with screen top and opening front door. approx 18x12x12? I have one bulb that i got from petsmart that is supposed to be a uvb basking combo that he gets for 12 hours on a timer. temp is a little above 90 at the basking spot and 75-80 at the bottom. around 40% humidity. fake plants. cage is located in my furnished basement on a table that is about 4ft high. im in northeast pennsylvania.

I am concerned about how little he eats and have been seeing him sleep quite a bit during the day in the last 3 days. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Can you post photos of the set up please?

And waht brand is the bulb?

RIght now, if its a glass cage, you are cooking him.

babies his age like temps no more than 85.

For supplementing;
cal without d3 every feeding.
cal with d3 twice a month
multi twice a month.

please find gutloading blogs by sandrachameleon on the forum for better gutloading recipes.

ALso,

large crickets are too big for a cham his age.

the bug should be no bigger than the space between his eyes.

the setup is a little crude for now. once hes a little bigger or will eat out of a cup ill move him into a 48" screen inclosure. Im also getting rid of the bedding tomarrow and replacing it with some reptile carpet. (the bedding was another wonderful suggestion from the petsmart associates  ).

is that mesh or glass on the top of the cage?

and what brand is the bulb?

how are you measuring the basking spot? and where are you measuring it, righ tunder the bulb, or on his tallest branch? etc.

It is screen at the top. I have a thermometer/hydrometer level with the highest branch. Not sure on the brand of the bulb. It was in a black box. I can find out tomarrow.

Ok well then i think you need to replace that basking bulb with a lower watt bulb if the temp really is 90 at his highest branch.
I would also mist him alot more.
Get a screen cage. allows for better air flow.

and find out the brand of bulb.

I will probably purchase the 5.0 bulb i see recomended alot for the uvb. would a normal house bulb be sufficient for basking? Im not sure if all chameleons are like this be he really doesn't like to be misted. i've tryed warmer water but he always trys to move away and seems unhappy whenever i do it.

the 5.o reptiglo or reptisun bulb is the recommended one yes.

a regular house bulb is fine, just not the coiled ones.

play with the wattage amount until you get one that makes the basking temp around 85.

and alot of chams hate to be misted, hell get used to it eventually.

my male veiled hated it as a baby too, now he has learned to tolerate it.

Another thing you might want to do is try and get the cage off the ground,
chameleons feel safer the higher up they are. and try and get the humidity at least in the upper 60's

well atleast you found the forum or he would be dead by now at 95* in a glass enclosure.

spurt of the moment buy or what? im glad your taking the proper steps to get him in the right place for now but do it quickly.

and try misting LIGHTLY not to close or high power/dense sprays, he shoould love it.

It looks like your basking branch is pretty low in the enclosure. I would move the basking branch higher up in the enclosure and measure the temperature there. The Cham needs an area lower than the basking spot for thermal regulation. The basking branch should be straight under the basking light, not at the side but around 8 inches away.

Well i've done some updates to my setup. I replaced the moss on the floor withe repticarpet, added a fogger, lighting is now a 24" 5.0 reptisun and a 40 watt bulb for heat. It stays about 85 at his basking spots and about 75-80 lower in the cage. and i just got smaller crickets. he is looking much better and i havent seen him sleeping. The only thing that concernes me is his color. i think when i first got him he was a little greener than he is now. but other than that he seems happy!! i've also started to try and feed him from a cup witch i hopes he stays with because he is fairly skiddish.

Heres some pics to give you an idea. sorry for the crappy quality took them with my phone.
