So I have a question about my chameleon getting the white dust around his nostrail. I know this can be caused by over supplimenting but I havnt givin him any suppliments for a couple weeks now and he still gets it. I read that reptiles can get this from not being wet enough. Could my problem be humidity. I got a Veiled because I read they are tollerable to different climates and humidity levels. I live in the desert and struggle to keep his humidity above 40 percent. So my question is should I get a waterfall to help with humidity and will this cure his white powder build up? any help is appreciated.

i have not heard of the white stuff being from lack of humidity. There has been alot of discussions on here and it has been decided that over supplementing does not cause this either. I think the last thread said it is a release of salts through their nostrils. A waterfall is not going to help this and it is plain not recommended to have a waterfall period!!! and you just proved the theory of the over supplementing that is is not that!!

it really isnt a huge deal to me if there is a little white on the nostrils. and i dont know of it being caused by low humidity.
to get your humidity up have you tried covering the sides of your cage ( if thats what u use ) with something to help hold the humidity in. of adding some live plant ( safe of course ) to your setup.
Welcome to the forums as well :D

First off, Welcome to the Forums! I'm Dan, I'm here every day so if there is every anything you need feel free to ask! My Girlfriend Lauren is also on here ( andallthatjazz) So feel free to contact us if you ever need help!

I've done a little playing around with that subject and what i have found is it is simply minerals expelled from the body. My chameleons when drinking regular tap water get the white salts around the nostrils on a daily basis ( concord water sucks) at the same time, when i put them on clean, distilled, mineral free water, no salts apear. Its simply the minerals and salt expelling from the body. There are some great studies on the subject as far as reptiles and salts around the nostrils. Alot of reptiles around marine waters Ie. the marine iguana have massive crusts of salt around the nostrils due to the exposure. ( or so i have read and been explained to)

Nothing to worry about, if it really bothers you, mist them and gently wipe off with a paper towel.:)

Please resume supplementing!
Welcome again!

Post pictures of your chameleon!!!

whew!

Thanks for the information. I'll start supplimenting again. Glad to hear its just from water probably. Utah water isnt good either. Thanks again for the help.
