My name is lee kent and i recently became the owner of a female veiled cham. My 10 yr old was given one by his grandparents. The cham came with all the fixing petsmart could sell my parents and after my research none of it correct. I did my research and have set up habitat to best of ability.
The cage is a screened 18x18x36 with ficus tree and vines for her to climb around on. I covered the back wall with cork tiles covered in bark, i put substrate but am going to remove it.
The lighting is zoomed double dome with a 60 watt basking light and 5.0 uvb bulb. Temp stays around 75 degrees in middle and 90it in basking area. I have ordered a stand to get it higher above cage.
I have had trouble getting humidity above 50%, i ordered a repti fogger. I have read forum and know humidifier is better but i do not want hassle.
I have really enjoyed the cham came over the last two weeks (huge learning curve) and look forward to watching it grow . She is shedding now and is not happy acting as normal but is eating well. I have read that they do not like to be handled much but Milly (cham) will climb down into my sons hand. I have attatched photo any suggestions would be nice.

Laying bins? I am doing my research on feeding issues, i have a calcium suppliment. I am misting three times daily for about 40to seconds.

welcome.
you'll find lots of info here to help you :)

You may find covering the back and one or both sides of the screen with plasctic will help retain humidity after you spray and as perspires from the plants, if the humidity in your home is too low for the needs of the chameleon. Screen is not ideal in all situations (certainly where I live a screen cage is less than ideal).

40 seconds of spraying is very likely insufficient for her hydration needs - consider a dripper in addition to the misting.

female v chameleons lay eggs, thus the laying bin. With control of temps and humidity this can be prevented, but its still advisable to have at least a pan of moist sand at the bottom of the cage so she can show you (by digging in it) that she needs a proper bin to lay. A new "mom" to a veiled Chameleon

I am also new to this forum. I just got Merlin, my veiled, two days ago after doing lots of research. I, too, am having issues getting humidity levels above 40% so I think I will try plastic on the back and a side of his home as was suggested above. I mist his plants multiple times a day, giving them a good soaking, and he has a 1 gal dripper system that gets filled more than once a day.

I'm trying to determine his age and when I can expect him to shed (plus pre and post shed characteristics to look for).

Thanks!

Welcome to the Chameleon Forums. This is a great place to learn about chameleons. I keep veileds and females can be a bit tricky. I have a couple of blogs attached for you below. The first is about the general care and the second is for the female. Females can and often do lay eggs without a male even being around.

Welcome to the forums:D I still have to refer back to these links for my veiled. I really recommend reading them wish I would have before my purchase. I keep my girls basking temp in the low 80s this slows down the eggs cycle which you will be needing the laying bin for. Good luck!! To you and your cham:)
