New to Chameleons

Hello! I'm going to be getting a veiled chameleon in a few weeks and it will be my first. I've been doing a lot of research on habitats and care for them so he will be healthy and happy. I've visited the local pet stores around here and I'm concerned because they aren't caring for them the way I've read you are supposed to. Petco had 4 in the tank and the humidity was set at about 10% every time I've been in there. The last time there was one lil guy obviously very sick laying on its belly in the bottom, looked like it was struggling to move its legs.. It would raise his head for a second and then it would drop like it wasn't strong enough to hold it up. =( I contacted management about it, but I've yet to go back to see if anything has been done. Petsmart "looked" better but I'm still nervous. I'm just don't want to buy one that's sick when all my knowledge is based on what I've read. I've noticed a lot of you order yours off the interwebs and was wondering if that would be a better and safer route for a first time owner? Any advice is welcome! Thanks!

(Not that caring for a sick one is bad, I just don't think I'm ready!)

Welcome!
sadly yes.

Petsmart and petco dont often care for their animals, especially chameleons, the way they should.

I would recommend you purchase a chammy from another member here, or from one of our site sponsors.

any questions you have, feel free to post a thread, or PM anyone!

Hello and Welcome! My names Dan. Pleasure to have a new member come aboard! If theres anything i can do to help you out, feel free to ask, i'm on here everyday and am always willing to help out.

I understand your dilemma, I would highly recommend purchasing your first chameleon, let alone all the others you'll buy once the addiction sets in:) haha from a reliable vendor who's focus is chameleons.

Hiya and welcome . I'm new to chams myself , but you came to the right place . These people know their chams . For my first cham , I went online to Tiki Tiki Reptiles and got the starter kit ( I personally got the deluxe kit ) . But with it , I got the cutest little baby female veiled cham . Ok , that is all from me ... back to responding with smiley's .

they also over charge for malnurished animals at petco, and petsmart

only time any of us buy them there is because we feel bad and are rescuing them from almost certain death..they will also sell you things you dont need just to make a sale..camimom is right..also when you get a cham from a forum member, or a site sponsor you get great help, and knowledgable answers specific for that species of chameleon.

good luck!! you will get addicted..chameleons are like crack!!:D
