Im looking into getting another chameleon i used to have 2 of them when i was 10 but they lasted about a year then died because I didnt know that I had to dust their food every 2weeks and they got really skinny and died also because i had them in a tank not a screen cage. My question is im going to be keeping my chameleon in the shed and my setup is a little weird its a triangular cage and 2 of the walls are made out of wood i would like to know if i can put my heat lamp inside of the cage and if he will surrvie in there in the winter. Also my cage is 2 ft tall by 4 ft by 4 ft is that a problem?

I appreciate the help thank you.

First of all where do you live? Why do you need to keep the chameleon in the shed? This sounds less than ideal.

I really don't mean to come off like a jerk, but chameleons are animals that take a lot of supervision, as reptiles go. A leopard gecko might be a better choice. No reptile is going to do well with improper temperatures, though. But chams are a whole new level of care, just to keep them nourished and hydrated. How old are you? No way your mom would allow the animal in your room?

I would not get another chamelon if i were you. A shed does not sound like a proper place for a chameleon. How hot/cold will it get in there? How well ventilated is it? When you say shed, here in The united states our sheds are usually made of metal and have no windows . So specify what you mean by shed!

I am 17 years old and take very good care of my pets I breed dogs have 2 fish tanks and have been taking care and loving pets for all my life my shed is well insolated its made out of wood with running water and electriciti with windows on every side of the shed.

I am sure that you love your animals but it sounds like you never researched the care of your other chameleons if you went a whole year without supplementing them with vitamins. They could have died from other reasons besides that. Where did you keep them? You need to think long and hard about getting one. You need to educate yourself first. they take alot of care and commitment.

It's almost better to wait a year and get one if and when you move out of your parents' house and go to college or whatnot, if you don't end up in a dorm room.

I have had pets ranging from dogs to praying mantises and I must say chameleons are a new beast. I bought a baby veiled a month ago and I have to constantly make sure he has food that is supplemented, hydrate him well, check on him to make sure he is a healthy color, etc. Though it isn't hard work per se, it is a good amount of work and you need to have a very good attention to detail. Keep in mind that vet bills even for chameleons can get incredibly expensive.

2'x4'x4' is a great size cage for a chameleon. (edit, didn't notice before you said 2' TALL, can you turn it on it's side so it's 4' tall?)

However, chameleons are extremely sensitive lizards & keeping it in the shed is not a good idea at all, especially in Ontario. I know your winters are waaaaaaaaaaay colder than mine are in Texas & I wouldn't keep my chameleon in my shed here during the winter.

You need to be able to maintain proper temperatures for your chameleon to live and the tolerances are somewhat tight. Maintaining temperature is just one thing, amongst a long list of other things, to keep a chameleon healthy. I wouldn't think you would have sufficient control of your chameleons habitat if were out in the shed.

Also, your feeders need to be dusted more often than every two weeks as well, and there's not just one kind of "dust". Please study up on supplementation before you consider acquiring another chameleon. (good blog by Sandrachameleon on supplementation: https://www.chameleonforums.com/blogs/sandrachameleon/65-supplements.html )

You can make it work, but you must be prepared with the correct knowledge & ability to properly care for your chameleon.

2 feet tall would not be appropriate for aboreal species of chameleons. I would not get one if you cannot keep it in a temperature controlled area.
