New Panther Chameleon

We'll for about 2 months i've been researching and waiting for the ny expo to come so i could hopefully purchase my first(?) Chameleon. I did have a vield when i was about 12(18 now) but the information i had back than and lack of forums like this one my husbandary wasnt the best. So i purchased this chameleon from LLL reptiles, the guy said he didnt know the age but that it was a male, I could tell the male part compared to the colors hes was showing. Not much for his age but i was seeing some. Than theres was another small female in the cage with the pale female colors. It was labeled Sambava x nosey b. I've only had him since yesterday. His cage is in the corner of my room but the tv is also in the other corner which is straight ahead(not from the front but from the side of the cage where the end of two of his high branches are located and he does for the last day walk over to that end) His lights go off at 11:00PM and on at 10:00AM, I have his mister set up to go off at 11:00AM,1:00PM,4:00PM,8:00PM, and 10:00PM for 3 minutes each. I notice he moves away when it comes on most of the time, than comes back to drink. When i first put him in the cage there was a little water on the leaves for me messing with the mister and he drank right away. I tried to get him to feed( on small dubia roaches) no luck so far. I'm thinking hes hungry because of two reasons, One hes been biting on the branches?(Yesterday, a few times) and i held a small dubia and tried to make it move and he shot at it but i was holding it to tight i couldnt let go fast enough when he shot his tounge so i've just been leaving them in the feeding cup but with no luck so far. Here are some pictures

Should i do anything different ? And as far as feeding should i just leave the roaches in the cup and let it be or do something to get him to eat?

-Thanks.

Wow the pictures seem to came out small when i uploaded them on here, maybe next time i should use photobucket?

The pics are thumbnails, click on them and they get big, however they are pretty blury!

As for the cham..

Dubias don't move much so it can be hard to get a cham to eat them from a cup. Better to hold them and pinch them a little. He may just plain not recognize them as a feeder, I have a cham that refuses to touch them. Id suggest grabbin some crickets and gutloading them over night. He should eat those without issue as they are very active. You can even put a couple dubia in with the crickets and see if he picks them up while shooting crickets.

Also it's hard to tell from your photos, but i'd guess 4 months for the age.

You need to get him eating asap!

Yeah the pictures arent the best sorry, I'll see if i can mess with moving these dubias to make him interested, if not i'll grab some crickets tomorrow.

I'm not sure if i'm asking for help but just posting a topic, should i fill it out anyway? Also really is 11:00 too late? I thought it didnt matter as long as its like a 12hour lights off period, i was reading a topic through here of someone trying to work around there work schedule and someone saying 12-12 or even if its 10-10 the difference does it matter, so does it really? If so what should be the latest lights should go off ? So i can change the time they come on.

If you want to may sure you are doing everything correct this time then fill out the ask for help.

A chameleon likes to go with the natural daylight and night hours. Most of us do 7 to 7 or 8 to 6......somewhere in that range. In the winter when it gets dark earlier they want to go down even earlier.

Cage Info:

Cage Type - Repti Breeze-18x18x36 for now, was thinking go smaller ended up going with that, defiantly wasn't going with a 2'x'2x4' just yet.

Lighting - 24"Hood, Repti glo 5.0(tube) Bought a Repti Sun, 24" cause i havent had a hood in so long(besides my fish tank) I thought the 24" hood i had would fit the 24" Repti sun i bought, when i opened it i was pretty upset.

Temperature - We'll i've only had the cage setup for one day, and today is warmer than the last few days, as i have a digital temp in another herp cage of mine(ackies) and the side that's been reading 80F for the last few days now reads 85 so today is defiantly warmer. My room temp alone is reading 81-82. Yesterday the basking temp for the chamelon was readin 87F and the bottom about 75F going up to 80F as i move up, but as today is hoter the temps are increased(I'm using a temp gun.)

Humidity - Its been reading 40 percent, and goes up alot when the mist comes on. I need to buy a new one the current digital one i have be acting weird, I forgot to buy one yesterday ugh.

Plants - Yes one huge pothos(I think thats whats it's called?) It takes up like so much space thought there would be room for more?

Placement - In the corner of my room, Theres two fans in my room but only one is on which is usually on me, and the room isnt much traffic just me walking around and a tv being on. The cage is about 6.5ft at the top part in the air.

Location - Im located in NYC

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - I've had the chameleon for a day, it was labeled as sambava x nosey b, and i have no clue on the age.

Handling - Dont touch it.

Feeding - Trying dubias(its only been one day)

Supplements - I have Rep cal without d3, the herptive and the other calicum(it has a pink label, the other is the blue label? Forgot the extact name have to go get the dish)

Watering - Pro mister, 5x a day for 3minutes each.

Fecal Description - Just had him hasnt pooped yet, I pretty much hope all is good with his fecal!(I'll post when he does his first poo)

History - He stays like a light pinkish color sort of, when i seen him i seen like some small red/greens, and when i was taking him home he went real dark until i got him in the cage)

A small update: I got him to eat one dubia so far ! I had to keep and keep on shaking that cup to make the dubia run around after about 3 whole minutes he shot his tounge out, so now i know hes eating, hes drinking.

Congrats on your new chameleon. Interesting hybrid Sambava x nosey Be - I look forward to seeing how he turns out

if you put a small superworm or cricket in with the dubia, the dubia may be disturbed into moving around more. Eventually he'll get the idea that the cup means food, and the movement will be less of an issue.

curious why the lights come on so late in the day, and stay on later, rather than being closer to real life daylight?

75F is okay for the cooler end, though 70F might be better. 85F is a bit warm for a little chameleon.

Use the plain calcium mostly, with the vitmain and D3 less often (once a week max) and dont forget to gutload those dubia (and other insects)

For your UVB reptisun 5.0 is the only bulb to use for chameleons. The Repti glo 5.0 is not recommended.

For basking 85 is the hotest a panther should get and if it's only 4 months old I'd keep it around 83. Humidity needs to be higher for a panther. Allot of member use a humidifier for panthers to keep the humidity up.

Use different feeders. The more the better for your cham.

Sandra im not even sure how the extra hour came in, I was doing 12 hours of light, that extra hour came in i think when i started setting up the mister time, I'll try to change the times to earlier, i set lights on at 10 because i dont always wake up so early as 6-7 and didnt want to have one day the lights on 6 than the next day im up 10 than so on and so for.

Janb is Repti glo bad? I've read threads saying there not much different but they are different but not bad? One of the threads i read was with Sandra Posting saying she has used these bulbs for over 10 years? When i messed up with the whole hood size thing i came here first to check what should i do, Petland doesnt sell Repti suns all they had was Repti glo so before i even bought it i checked on here so i figured if people are saying they arent bad but repti suns are better than i could use it for the time being until November which is the next expo around here. I was reading more than one topic also with people saying they use them alot of the senior members at that, so im wondering now can i use this bulb or not? For atleast 2 months at that.

Thanks

Go to the top to search and search ReptiGlo and read all the threads where people are having problems with their chams due to using the ReptiGlo. There were several on here this past weekend.

I'm going to try to see if i can find a repti sun, also at night when i turn his lights on my tv is still on cause of course im watching it, the tv is about 10 feet away, he cant see it from the front cage point of view but its like on the side part he can if he goes over there, so i covered the side with a sheet so he cannot see it, im wondering if i should even cover it, also if i should, should i always just leave it covered as the tv is usually always on. Thanks I'll try to stay updated with him

Well today i bought some meal worms and crickets, got him to eat about 5 meal worms and 3 crickets, i put the meal worms, crickets, and 3 dubia roaches in a bowl to see if that trick would work but hes not paying the dubia roaches no mind even if they do move. Arghh i hate crickets. :( Also im wondering if him being able to see my tv is bad? As its on pretty much all day, i've covered the side with a dark blue sheet so he cannot see it, incase its bad.

-Thanks

Mealworm are not good for your chameleon. They are hard to digest. Try superworms instead or silkworms. Silkworms are excellent!

In the daytime the TV is ok but at night your chameleon need a cool, dark quite place to sleep.

Ahh really, thanks for letting me know about the mealworms, I think he'll have to wait for super worms he's a bit to small to take on a super, also i'll stick to covering up the cage at night so he cant see the tv, i also changed his times from 10-11pm to 8am-8pm. Wish he would take dubias that make my life much easier lol

He may like dubia better when he's older. My female likes them but my male will have nothing to do with them. You can buy superworms in all different sizes.

Hello, all its been a few days, but i've noticed the day i bought the crickets and meal worms was tuesday and when i put them in a feeding cup he ate almost in no time, and i left some in there, about 2 crickets, 3 dubias, and like 2 small meal worms(I'm not going to continue to use meal worms i just left those in there from last time) and everyday i check there still there? This was tuesday and its now friday few hours off saturday, is this normal? Is he just not hungry? Also im hoping he drinks? Cause when the mister comes on he moves away from it but i tend to look about 5 minutes or so after it goes off but never see him coming over to drink, but maybe he does drink after the 5 minutes of me looking? Those two problems seem to be concerning me i waited a few days and decided today i'll post since still no new eating or me seeing any drinking
