I'm hoping to get a comment or two on my little guy. I've had him for a couple months, I sure hope he looks healthy!

Welcome to the forums. Derpy is adorable. This is a great place to learn about chameleons. I'm sure you'll love it here. :)

Welcome to the forum :)
Jacksons have got to be the sweetest, most docile of all chams.
I love mine.
Your little guy looks very happy and laid back :D

Hello and welcome to the forums and chameleon ownership!! I do not own a Jackson's, but there are plenty of members that do. It is a great place to learn and have fun at the same time!!

How old is your little guy and where did you get him?

He looks healthy, but he needs a better diet as he looks rather skinny!?
Maybe it's just the picture!?

Derpy is about 6 months old. I got him from a pet store when he was about 1 month. I've always wondered about him being skinny. When I got him from the pet store I could see his ribs but he seemed to have plumped up. I've attached another picture to show him from the top - see his width. Let me know what you think.

I have him on a diet of crickets. From what i've been reading it seems like I should be giving him some meal worms as well. I was feeding my crickets with an orange but that became some what of a hassle having to go to the store every couple of days so i've been feeding my crickets Flukers. He always has crickets in his cage so I assume he never really goes hungry. I put a few new ones in every couple days.

I've also been noticing that his tail is always lighter than his body. Like he wants to shed but it won't. Any thoughts about that?

I really love the post and help I can get. I love my little guy and hope he lives long. I'm a little worried because I've hard at about 5 months or so they can just drop dead :( makes me rather sad to think about so I want to do my very best for him.

Welcome!

There's a lot of debate about leaving feeders loose in the cage. For one thing they lose their gutload contents pretty quickly so unless you leave any food in the cage for them they end up pretty empty crunchy nothings and can chew on your cham at night. The commercial gutloads you are likely to find in AK pet shops aren't great (been there done that). Sponsors of this forum offer much better ones that may also help him fill out more.

Don't give him "regular" mealworms. They are pretty high in chitin and not much else. Get some Zophobas (aka superworms) instead and gutload them on dark leafy greens, citrus fruit, and fortified cereal grains. Living in AK we are a lot more limited in what we can get for our chams, though you are a lot better off in Anchorage than we are down in SE. Instead of mealworms, try to start a dubia roach colony. If you need a starter colony the pet shop I use in Juneau (Wee Fishie Shoppe: 1-800-478-0728) might have some from my original colony. It's too cold here for them to survive if they happen to get loose, but they don't climb well or fly anyway so are pretty easy to deal with. They will help you round out that cricket diet and plump him up a bit. He looks a bit lean to me, but not skinny. Seeing ribs as he moves around is normal. Better ways to judge his body condition include looking at the base of his tail: it should look oval in cross section from top to bottom. Completely round is too fat. Seeing the tendons clearly means he's thin. Also their casque should be rounded out, not concave, but this can also be a sign of dehydration. Better insect feeder gutloads will also help him fill out more.
