Hey everyone. I am a 21 year old college art student in Austin TX. I have recently acquired four chameleons. Two baby panthers and two Jackson's. I have a lot of other reptiles and tarantulas as well.
Other than reptiles... I love art and motorcycles. I am originally from Portland Oregon.

I was hoping that there would be someone on this forum who would be able to tell me what type of Panther babies I have. They came from a mixed variety at a local pet shop and they were unable to tell me which was which... I know it is probably very difficult to tell the difference when they are this young.

Hello, and welcome!

Unfortunately you will probably never truely know the locale of the chameleons. Sorry. I hope you don't plan on keeping them together for very much longer! Also, does the one in the first pic have a lumpy head or is it just blurry?

It is just blurry. I know they are both males. I am not going to keep them together for very long. I actually have some more cages on their way. They should be here in a few days. :)

I thought it would be easier to tell them apart once they get older. If not, oh well.

They may become different colors because they are from different locales or just because of variation in one locale. Or they my be brothers and end up having very similar colors. You will never really know though, so it would not be a good idea to breed them to females in the future if you had any plans for that.

You will have a very hard time selling the offspring when you do not know their locale. Often times female will not sell at all and you are stuck with 10-40 females. If you plan on breeding I would take them back and buy some from a breeder who is certain of their locale.

I am not worried about getting a lot of money from the babies. That is a long way off anyway. Screameleons has some babies for sale that are crosses for 285.00 (Although I realize they are certain of what they are crossed with). I know the pet store I got them from will buy any babies off me I can not sell myself. Also, I know they are either Nosy Be, Ambanja, or Ambilobe. Later on down the line if I decide to get more serious about breeding them I will pick up some nice locale specific panthers from some breeders. I know the babies I got came from a local breeder here in Austin. Maybe I can get in touch with them. I think though that there will be an obvious difference between a nosy be and an ambanja so there may be a chance of being able to tell the difference. Who knows what will happen. By the time they reach maturity I may not even want to breed them. But in the mean time, I do want to try my hand at breeding them. I think it will be a fun project.

Thanks for your concern though.:p

It might be a good idea to see what the sire's of the babies he sold to the pet shop look like. Then maybe you can put the color to the sire if they happen to look pretty different. Most people cannot sell chameleons for as much as screameleons. They are a very well known and established breeder who sells top quality animals. A more realistic figure for a crossed panther would be 100-150 for a male if they actually end up looking appealing to others. An unknown cross that doesn't look appealing to buyers would not sell for very much if at all.

If you want to dabble with breeding, I suggest you buy another male and a female from known blood and just have your males as pets. Though I feel they should be pets regardless

Good luck with whatever path you choose though.

Yeah I am not expecting to get nearly as much as they do. I was just using them as an example. I might get another pair as you suggested. We will see what happens. =)
