New free range build!!

GEEZ! When you said you were going to get it done, you weren't kidding! Looking good! I know one of the first things Phineas did when he started exploring was climb up to the top rack. So I built cages around my basking lights.

I notice that on yours that panel around the top? Also wanted to as you if you put screen on the underside of the rack? S.T.P has already tried to fit his head through the bars but he doesn't fit! Still don't want to risk him getting stuck

Oh, the panel on the top is just for me because I wanted to hide all the lighting and tubing - Phineas climbs right over it. I didn't put a screen underneath - he can't fit his head through either - but he does try sometimes! Hasn't got stuck yet, that I know of. I made a tube out of hardware cloth to put around my basking lights and then wrapped the tubes with tape so they couldn't be climbed - that has worked well.

What fun you are going to have watching S.T.P. explore!

Ok thanks do you think if that panel was a little taller he'd still get over it??

Just another shot ;)

Just watched your vid - LOVE IT! I can't believe how much you accomplished in one night!

I don't know your cham's personality, but that panel would have to be glued to the ceiling for Phineas not to get over it.

Haha well wouldn't you know it my guy figured out the bars at the back of the rack are spaces apart just a little more that the rest and he can squeeze right up and through (smarter than given credit for) so I fixed it up by putting some bamboo in those ones, then he walked out to the perched in the very front of the cage and literally laid down on his belly and pouted no joke looking at me like seriously man SERIOUSLY!! Haha

Ha! Yes, it seems like the more I try to stop Phineas from doing something, the more he becomes obsessed with doing it. I never tried to stop him from getting on top of the FR - just protected him from the basking lights. After about 5 months, he stopped going up there.

And yes, I also have and continue to underestimate him in so many ways! I guess i have quite a lizard prejudice that I didn't even realize.

Yeah earlier tonight I went outside to flip a steak and came back in to find him pulling at the bamboo sticks I put up to try and block him haha

HaHa. You know, when I spent months researching all about chams, these behavioral issues never seemed to come up. In my imaginary dream cham world, he would just happily eat and bask the day away. Not explore the entire house, crawl into the bird cage, scratch at the door to go outside, etc.

But I guess if I knew all that, it may have dissuaded me - and what a pity that would have been!

Had to throw up a picture of him sleeping in his new free range same place last 2 nights it's funny because this perch sticks out about 1.5ft from the cage so he's totally exposed anyways enjoy

nice setup, i also use that metal shelf for some things :p

how do you prevent him from getting to the lights? I have found that when I free-range, they seem to love to climb directly onto the heat domes (and not realize this will burn them...)

I've found that to be the hardest part of free-ranging so far
