New Chameleon

Chameleon Info:

• Your Chameleon - Veiled Chameleon, male, I was told he was around one, judging by the size it’s not too far off. I’ve had him for 3 1/2 weeks.
• Handling - I have tried to get him out every day for about five minutes, he doesn’t seem to mind me holding him.
• Feeding - I feed him crickets and horn worms? Crickets: 5-7 every day, horn worms once a week? Every morning around 9AM?
• Supplements - I use zoo med vitamins every other week and the calcium without D3 every other feeding. Plan to use calcium WITH D3 once to twice a month. (Heard that’s ok)
• Watering - I use a dripper, with reptile water drops. I mist twice daily? i have seen my chameleon drinking a couple times.
• Fecal Description -
  there had been white in his droppings, the other day it was yellowish (heard that’s a sign of dehydration. never had parasite testing.
• History - I got him from an acquaintance who had him housed in an enclosure with 2 other male chameleons..... he’s alone now

Cage Info:

• Cage Type - I purchased the reptibreeze starter kit in the beginning (without knowing no one recommends it) I have been looking at the Reptibreeze XL and want to purchase ASAP.
• Lighting - I use the lights that came with the starter kit... (is that ok?)
• Temperature - Basking Spot of 85 at the moment mid range of enclosure is 73°.
• Humidity - 50%.
• Plants - no live plants.
• Location - Pennsylvania

Current Problem - I am concerned of his tail, when I got him there was an area that is dented it looks to be healing and an old wound but want to make sure it isn’t to be a cause of too much concern. Also, the past two days he hasn’t eaten any crickets, which is odd because every day I’ve fed him he’s gone CRAZY for the crickets and eaten around 7 each time.. He doesn’t like vegetables of any sort I’ve noticed he only likes things that move! Is there any way he could be bored of the crickets and need some different type of insect maybe other types of worms?

Too your first concern. The tail is just an old scar, probably from fighting .

OK so adult main needs maybe 3 to 4 large crickets every other day, maybe even less. Temp can effect this.. Obesity and gout are problems common to veileds from over feeding. We like to feed our guys, so if you like to watch him eat, feed more smaller insects. like 2 small crickets, to one large.

So by vitamins, I assume multi vitamin with beta carotene. A proper schedule would be calcium every feeding but 4. those four every other week alternate calcium withD3 and the multivitamin.

• Cage Type - I purchased the reptibreeze starter kit in the beginning (without knowing no one recommends it) I have been looking at the Reptibreeze XL and want to purchase ASAP.

Larger is better. Look for used as well sometimes you can find them cheap.

• Lighting - I use the lights that came with the starter kit... (is that ok?) Sadly no, this is the one that gets you. You need T5HO 6% or 5.0 depending on brand. The crapy part is you will need to purches fixture, MAKE SURE IT IS T%HO, and bulb separate. You are looking at around $50 to $75. Now DO NOT SKIMP HERE. You will want all of it. I would get a duel fixture minimum, if not quad. You only need one tube for UVB, but your plants will need something else. This is your critical spend.
• Temperature - Basking Spot of 85 at the moment mid range of enclosure is 73°.
• Humidity - 50%. This is ok, but best would be to raise humidity at night when it is cooler, and let it dry during day, even down to 30% is OK
• Plants - no live plants. This may be just me, but I think they are a critical element. they aid with humidity and security.
• Location - Pennsylvania

Other things to consider is the layout of the cage. There is an optimal zone for both heat and uvb lights, so we need to make sure our branches are placed right. You can raise the light off the scree, which is best, then you will have more of the top space to use for him.
