Okay, so I am buying my very first chameleon EVER!
She's a veiled chameleon and I had a few questions that I really need answered!!

1.) If I get her a Heated Rock will I still need like a UV light?

2.) Even if I do not plan on breeding her will she still lay unfertilized eggs? If not does she need to breed to survive? (Read something that said females need to lay eggs or they die)

3.) Should I still feed her crickets even though she's a baby? If so how? she's tiny.

4.) What is the best way for her to get water? (My idea was that since they like seeing dripping water I should put real plants in her cage and spray water on the leaves so it drips down)

Please and thank you so much :D Her name is Mooie Weegschalen
(Beautiful scales in dutch)

1) Don't buy a heated rock. A UVB 5.0 light is essential. The only lights I use are a uvb 5 and a household 40w

2) She will lay eggs without breeding. I'm not exactly sure when female veilds develop eggs though but you need to watch this video
https://www.chameleonforums.com/laying-bin-set-up-educational-video-77225/

3) Pinhead crickets or small crickets shouldn't be too hard to find at local petstores. You will want to provide a variety in her diet other than just crickets though (silkworms, roaches, butterworms, etc) Most feeders you will have to buy online unless you have some really great reptile stores around

4) You will want to spray the cage 3-4 times a day to keep humidity up and to provide a water source. On top of that, you should get a dripper (you can buy one or make one yourself - a gallon jug with a pinhole at the bottom will suffice)

5) SUPPLEMENT. Plain calcium (without d3) every day. Vitamin A powder once a month. I'm not exactly sure how often for calcium+d3 (I think once a month?) because mine stays outdoors (natural sunlight will provide enough d3 so you don't have to)

1) no heating rock and you need a UVB light. You can use a low watt house bulb for heat

2) female veileds will lay infertile eggs even without introducing a male

3) you can feed lil crix, superworms, mealworms, Phoenix worms, silk and hornworms, roaches, etc of appropriate size. Properly gut loaded, of course. ;)

4) misting is fine, but you'll also need a dripping system or misting system as well.

Welcome and post up pics when you get her!! :D

I got her today and ohmygod! she's so cute!!! she's really fast I didn't expect that lol, we also didn't expect her to be so small because we got her a 6 ft cage! so right now she's a clean fish tank with fake plants for like an hour then we're going to the pet store :D She already picked out a branch she likes and likes to chill up there...I'm very happy with her :D

Hello and congratulations on your new baby girl!

Bare in mind that chameleons are fragile little lives. Take plenty of time to accustomise yourself to their requirements (which are fairly specific).

Loads of good links have been given above and there is a lot more great information in all the past posts on this forum. Have a good ol' rumage around :)

She really shouldnt be in a fish tank.

They need more heighth than width.

not to mention, they need more ventilation.

fish tanks dont allow this.
she should be in a screen cage. from exo terra, zoo med, etc.

I know, she's just sitting in there until we make our trip to the pet store in an hour and it has like 3 big holes in the top of it (where the filter would go) and I put a couple of fake leaves, flower, and some branches in there she's already climbing around happily and has adapted well in my opinion. :)

i hope on that trip to the store you are getting a screen cage, supplements, bugs, uvb light.

yo ucan use a regular house bulb for basking.

Okay we got her in her new cage today :D she is so happy! We put a hibiscus and a little bonsai tree in there, she likes her fish tank actually so we took the lid off and put the fake leaves in there so she can crawl in if she wants! We got her lights, meal worms, crickets, and a little food bowl, and a squirt bottle I've misted her like 10 times today and its SO COOL to see her eat and drink.. my little Mooie is so cute <3 thanks for the help everyone!
