New Chameleon Mom

Hello everyone. My name is Shellie and I am a new Veiled Chameleon Mom. He owns me I don't own him. He is about a month old and named Sputnik. I have done so much research my head is about ready to explode lol. I just wanted to introduce us.
Because it is December I do not have the live plants I wish to have at this time. I live in IL so my choices were slim. The first sign of spring and I will be purchasing more live plants for his home.
We are cruising along smoothly and have a happy lizard

i like your setup! i have a suggestion, the lamp maybe should be brought out to the middle. i noticed the vine is there just under it, if your cham is right under the basking bulb he might get a bad burn since hed be right up against it. you need a little distance there, i try to give at least a half of a foot from my lamp but maybe someone very experienced with veileds can chime in and have better info.

Welcome to the forums and congrats on your new veiled. Sputnik is adorable! I keep veileds and they are awesome chameleons. You can see my veileds here: https://www.chameleonforums.com/threads/my-beautiful-veileds.142194/

I do have a few questions for you. Are you sure Sputnik is a boy? Does he have spurs (little bumps) on the heels of both back feet? I always thought the corn plant was not safe for chameleons. Did you find that on the safe plant list? Veileds eat everything so you have to be very careful with plants and stuff like what's on the bottom of his enclosure. I recommend removing it and leaving the bottom bare. I have a few links for you below that have help me to have healthy and happy chameleons.

I was just looking at it thinking the same thing. I will definitely move it

Oh btw yes he has spurs.

I like pothos they are virtually indestructible, and can be found in the winter sometimes at least around my area. Good luck :)

P.S. I couldn't help but notice you have calcium with d3, and a multivitamin, but didn't see calcium without d3. Do you have that?

If you are looking to find more plants, you might be able to find some at your local Lowes. I live in Iowa, where it can also be tricky to find good live plants during winter. Our Lowes just got a new shipment of tropical plants in. I was able to get a small pothus and a large fiscus. The fiscus was on clearance for $3, they were clearing out for all the new plants.

I will definately make a trip there and see what I can find. Thank you!

I use a Corn Plant as well. I heard they love the flowers, not that I've seen any yet, if ever. According to the safe list (the one we had here, no warnings, just labeled safe) they're safer than Pothos, which I also use. My girl tried to eat it when I first got it but she's since given up. It's not easy to bite into it would seem. Maybe she doesn't like it or both may be the case.

Congrats on your Sputnik!

I added some more fake plants to Sputnik's room yesterday. He is near a window and gets some natural light from the sun rise. No direct sunlight into his room though. I am adding a feeding bowl today as well. I will feel much better about knowing what he eats rather then him chasing them down in the cage. It's so big and he is so tiny I'm afraid he is not eating enough. But he seems happy and loves having his back rubbed when I hold him.

Hi Shelly! I'm a new mom, too! We've had our 5-month old veiled for a week now. I know how you feel about information overload and exploding brains. I thought I read and researched enough to feel comfortable bringing our little guy home and now that he's here, I'm worried his water is too warm or too cold or his home is too big or too small and if there is even a speck of dust in his enclosure that could harm him. I want to leave him alone the first few weeks for him to "destress" but I'm worried I'm not cleaning his cage out enough. LOL...I wonder how long it takes to stop worrying so much? Anyway, congrats on Sputnik!

The worrying is normal and will gradually subside with research. I remember the very first day I got my panther chameleon, he closed his eyes, turned pale white, and stiffened up on me. I thought he had passed away... but that was just Waldo putting on his pajama and sleeping a bit early, lol.

Finally finished Sputnik's cage. Got rid of the corn plant and found a weeping fig and a photos. I was very surprised as soon as I put them in the cage he was all over the plant eating crickets so there was no adjustment period It seems. This weekend we will be adding the monsoon mister so he will have his forever home all ready for him to grow up big and strong. I did trim the plant down dramatically after this picture was taken so the top of the fig is not as close to his heat lamp

You really should get rid of the substrate. Veileds eat all kinds of things and if it's not on purpose, it's on accident. It would be easy for Sputnik to shoot at a cricket and pick up some of that substrate with his sticky tongue. It could choke him or cause impaction.

Also, a note on the Monsoon. A lot of people here say they're not that great and break often. You may want to look into a Mistking.

Sorry to be downer. ;)
