New Cham

I'm got my first chameleon in yesterday (panther ambilobe)! Not only did I see him eat a cricket off of the screen that had escaped from the feeding cup, but I saw him drink water off of a leaf while I spraying! :D

I know that seeing a chameleon drink water is pretty rare so I feel extra lucky. He didn't eat any crickets out of the cup, I'm not sure if he couldn't see them or just didn't want to get them from the cup, so I took the few that were in there and put them on the upper leaves. Hopefully he'll find them.

Thanks to Chameleon's Northwest for a nice healthy chameleon.

Pictures are nice.

Sandy doesnt typically cup feed her chams, if I recall.

So, in this case you will want to free range some feeders to insure your cham is eating well. Dont worry, they have an uncanny ability to find the feeder. :D

I will certainly try to post pictures tonight, but Basil (the cham) will probably already be sleeping when I get home. I have to work late tonight.

I've pretty much given in to free-range feeding, but I was originally concerned that he wouldn't find his food. He's only about 5-6 inches and his enclosure is 18x18x36 with lots of vegetation. I couldn't find non-fertilizing organic soil, so I left the 2 large plants in their plastic pots for now and covered the soil with moss.

I haven't noticed basil going much lower than 5' yet though (enclosure is on a 3' cabinet). Plus, if his food is hiding somewhere, I won't know how much he's really eaten.

I have the same problem, My little panther Marley is quite scared of me so he won't let me hand feed him :(
I've also tried to leave some locusts in a cup for him but it's hard to get him steering in the cups direction to see that there is anything in there...
My enclosure has quite a lot of foliage too so it's difficult to see if he eats them or not so it's quite tough trying to monitor what he is actually eating!

Unfortunately I haven't actually found a solution yet

Most of the crix if thats what your feeding will go to the top and find the basking spot light. So if i find several uneaten feeders at lights out. I go ahead and take out as many uneaten crix as i can without disturbing him much. That way i can get a pretty accurate count how i fed vs how many are left = how many he ate that day. Also its not a good thing to leave a lot of hungry feeders in his cage at nite. A couple is ok but i try to get most out.
I haven't had much luck w/cup feeding younger chams. But if you keep trying he will eventually get it.

I haven't really had him long enough to determine his "favorite" basking spot. I did put the cup near the limbs for basking, but it didn't seem to help. He didn't go there much (that I saw).

what about leaving some cricket food down low so that the crix will eat that an not the cham?

I didn't know that the crix would go for the light. I've been planning on feeding him twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. I don't know if he'll have much time to track down food in the evening before lights out. His lights-out time is at 7:30 PM and I get home generally around 6 PM.

It can be daunting to catch a cricket in a cage with lots of foliage. I'm 1 for 3 as it is!

I just stopped cup feeding my baby yesterday, for her its hit or miss she eats out of the cup or if one escape she will free range so I just gave up. When I do cup feed I just throw a cube of that orange Flukers stuff in there with them. Yes the crix deffinitly go to the light you will find them upside down on your cage top.

Well the upside down crickets will work out well, since Basil likes to climb upside down too. :)) . I think I need to lift my basking light up a few inches as well, so that he doesn't burn himself if he walks over to it while upside down. :O

What a tease,I thought I was going to see a picture :p;):D

Congratulations on your new baby! an't wait to see pictures!!

Mine won't eat from dinky little cups! Try a bigger container or milk jug or something. I'll be waiting for a picture!

Photos, as promised.
