New cham lover intro...

Hello all the name's Matt, I'm 20 years old born and raised in Dallas, TX. I'm a student aiming for a career in the studio audio recording industry and my other passion is motorsports, I have a 300zx that's sees the track quite often. Enough about me...
I've been lurking the boards the last couple of months and soaking up information, which there is plenty around here it seems. I've decided to get a male veiled in the next week or so, most likely from Julirs if she still has one left which from the way it sounds she will. The last few days I've been building his cage. It's 36"X24"X18" wooden 2X2 frame that have been stained/sealed, fiberglass window screen, with a tile floor, and drainage system. The next projects are a misting system using a rubbermaid tub, a small pond pump, an aquarium heater and a couple of misting heads/nozzles I've found around the house (which ever one works out the best) and a ultrasonic fogger system to keep the humidity up, it's about 45% where the cage is going to be and I'm moving out to Phoenix, AZ late next spring and it's gonna be even drier out there. The plan for that system is a floating ultrasonic fogger in a rubbermaid tub with a fan pointed into the tub that will push the fog up through a funnel connected to a line that is connected to the drain. The actual drain line is level with the lowest part drain cup and the fog line ends a good two inches above the bottom of the drain cup. Everything will be on timers and as automated as possible as far as environmental control. I deceided to tile the floor for ease of cleaning. Here's the pics, sorry for the poor quality 1st gen macbook built in cameras suck...

I bought a ficus ben. and a pothos, notice the holder for the pot in the cage, and a hibiscus will join the scene soon. I still need to order a repti-sun 5.0 bulb, supplements and some flexible vines. I just need to get it all together so I can get the temperatures and timing of the systems worked out. Plan is to also get a cricket colony going soon. That's it I guess, all comments and criticism are very welcome. I don't want to get anything wrong, but I feel very confident that I've done my homework. This site, the kitty site and the chameleonnews site have been very informative. I'll post up more pics of the cage using my sister's camera in the enclosure section, hopefully complete with all systems working by late next week. Thanks for reading....

Hey man, sounds like you have some ideas cooking. There are some issues with your plans, but you can still do them. First, your screen is going to have holes soon after feeding your cham some crickets. They can eat through the fiberglass screen pretty easily. I had an issue with this, so I know how frustrating it is to try and patch holes. I would just use some metal screen to avoid the issues. and in AZ you'll need that humidifier.. If i were you I would get the Vick's model that has the removable air director... it works great with 2" PVC pipe. it seals perfect and you can plumb the fog anywhere. You also won't need a fan with a humidifier. I use the 2" pipes and then put a reducer at the end to make a venturi effect. It works great.. normally the fog just rolls out... but with the reducer it 'shoots' out. Make sure the 5.0 you get is a linear tube.. not the compact. looks like you've done a lot of reading and are setting up BEFORE you get the cham which is good! BTW, Juli will provide you witha great cham!

Thanks for the help. As far as the screen I thought about that as soon as I finished putting it on. I'm going to try to cup feed the little guy to help try to reduce crickets chewing on the screen. It's easily replaceable so if it gets chewed on I'll get some aluminum screen both were pretty cheap, I was just worried about nail injuries. I'll look into the Vick's humidifier. I have a ultrasonic fogger from when I had a few tree frogs when I was younger. I thought it worked still but after pulling it out last night and testing it, its shot. So the vick's humidifier it'll be. How long does a full reservoir usually last you? Yeah, don't worry I know to get the florescent tube, I have a few extra 24" fixtures laying around for it. Anyways thanks for the help!

Gorgeous cage! Seal that wood and the screen advice is good-I should take a pic of all of the cricket chewed screen on my cricket bins! :) PM'd you about the cham.

I used a stain with sealer on all of the wood, no worries. I'll PM you next week to get your paypal info. I'll probably be ready for him to be here Wednesday after next. Send those pics whenever, thanks again.

Welcome to the world of chameleons. Glad that you have done your homework BEFORE buying your chameleon. Below is a link to a cage that I built and if you want to see more photos and the tools that I used and so forth see my album in my profile.

I love your cage, wish I could afford to make one like it. After I go get some aluminum screen today, I'll still have less than $25 into the cage. A lot of the materials I found around garage. All of the wood was left over from some deck railing I built a couple of weeks ago.

Welcome to the forums. Julirs is a wonderful breeder and takes excellent care of her chameleons. You can't go wrong if you buy a baby from her. Jann
