I got a new panther on Monday and he hides away turning black, he has been coming out but not alot and he sits under his light which is at 93f and opens his mouth but doesn't move
I don't know whether its just he hasn't settled in fully yet
He's 4 months old and a great little guy, eats and drinks fine and everything else
So not sure if its just cuz he isn't use to the new environment?
what do you guys think?

Yeah he sounds like he is just a bit frightend of you, u have to remember hes in a new enviroment and doesnt know weather your going to eat him or not Lol it could take him couple of weeks to settle in maybe longer as hes only a baby :) and 93 might be abit too hot for him thats why he will be opening his mouth to cool down, u will have to be patient with him he just needs to get used to u and see you as a positive like bringing him food and drink rather than a preditor, just give him time :)

^^^ I agree^^^
What type of light are you using? You might want to lower the wattage or move the basking light away from the top some so that the basking temp is not as high.

Hi,

The fact that you just got him tells me he is almost defiantly still going through an adjustment period and this will mean he is going to show some signs of stress (darker color, less movement, threatening you if you get close, shying away..). The open mouth while sitting still is a good way to tell he is most likely over heated in his basking spot, it can also tip you off to URI (upper repertory infection), but without knowing the husbandry and past care this would be impossible to say if it is a concern or not? If you fill out the fact sheet (find it under the main clinic forum), with all his info it will help others to see what, if any issues there may be with his husbandry? Cage type, size, temp, humidity and feed will all be very important factors in helping determine what may be going on. I know others may report having kept basking spots at this range, however I have found that anything above 86-89 (not for Jackson, but Veiled and Panther ) seems to start causing more stress than good, especially if utilizing a glass enclosure!!! Try to see if you can reduce the heat a bit and this may help. If he is overheated then this will cause you other health issues in the very near future.

I would advise you to not attempt to touch him at all, give him a week or so to adjust and come to know you as a non-threat.

Definately not a uri, I'll stick the 40 watt bulb in in the morning, he seems fine and happy when he's moving about but then hides away
I'll leave him to settle in and carry on as I have been
Thanks for the replies
