New Cage--- Question

Zoey

So we went and picked up this cage for Zoey.

http://boise.craigslist.org/for/497730833.html

It was previously used for a Ball Python but now its going to be used to Zoey.

I was wondering if the light can be set on the top of the cage for this kind or if it would end up burning through?

Thanks in advance for the answers.

no basking lamp should ever be put inside of the cage.
it can burn the chameleon.
I think she meant whether it's ok to just lay the lamp on the top side.
And in my opinion, the lamp will melt the plastic.

Lol. :D:D:D

Yeah I meant put them on the top of the cage like we do with the Males.

I never put lights inside the cage, it makes me mad when people do this because of how easily their pet can get burnt.

If we lay some metal things down on top of the cage and then set the light on that, would that be okay?

im going to be honest....i hate thos cheap cages. i know a bunch of people use them too.

Well she needed a new cage and we won't have $100+ anytime soon to go and but her one like the Male has, so we thought this would be best, even if we change it later in the year.

Just like on a closer look I thought it would melt or burn through but the BF was not so sure. Hence the post to see.

I would find a way to place it a a few inches above the top of the cage.
Just keep an eye on it to see if it even starts to show any signs of bubbling or melting, if so mount it even higher up.

metal transfer heat. so, it is not gonna work.
Maybe some kind of wood? or a really tough rubber or plastic?

its thick coated metal.. its not plain metal. But I'll see if we have anything else laying around

If that's a Flexarium or reptarium, those things don't burn as well as people say they do. I have up to 100W spot bulbs sitting on top of mine, and the most that will ever happen is a discoloration. Turns a bit yellow. We've actually TRIED to melt those things, and it takes quite a bit.... I think you're safe putting the light on top of the cage. I've been doing it for years with no problems.

100 watt MV melted it in like 15 mins. not to mention they are black and light does not pass in very well. they are very dark inside and it is hard to veiw you chameleon. you cant hold it very often so why not have a cage you can see inside of.

You're not supposed to put MVB's that close to the cage anyways. The light needs to be at least 12" away from where the Chameleon can reach. I have 9 different Chameleons in 9 different Flexariums, and don't have a problem. I have never had a problem. Of course I like my aluminum cages better, but still it works fine. For UVB I put a 8.0-10.0 so that the UV penetration is enough.

Understand that not everybody has access to fancy aluminum caging. Reptariums and Flexariums, while they aren't the best on the market, they do their job just fine. Sure they rip easy, that's why you sew them. If this is the only cage they can get, they need to make the best out of it, and that's more than doable.

EDIT** Here is a 100g Flexarium. Set up optimally for a Chameleon. Looks fine to me. Lights don't seem to be melting it. Actually, I know they're not melting it. They still aren't.

I use several Reptariums and have lights up to 75W on them with no issues. They really are not bad cages for the money. Simply put an extra clamp lamp with an extra lightbulb and they light up just fine. They also hold in humidity a little better than standard screen.
Zoey-you can not still just place tons of crickets in like you have been doing-because crickets will eat right though the mesh.
