Needing Panther Info!

My boyfriend and I are looking into purchasing a panther chameleon within the next 6 months. I know a LOT about veiled chams... But panthers- not so much! Can anyone please just give me info about their personalities, enclosures, food preferences, temperature requirements, longevity, etc? Any information helps, as well as information on fantastic breeders! :)

veild care and panther care is pretty much one in the same. The panthers can have a higher basking temp. Check out our site sponsors websites in the upper right hand corner. They are all reputable. It is just a matter of which one you like the best. Some of our members have made up care sheets on panther care. I am sure one of them will post all the info, but like I said their care is pretty much the same.

I keep both panthers and veileds. My veileds have the most personality but maybe that's because I'll had them since hatch or very young and didn't get the panthers until they were older. Their life expectancy and care is about the same. I keep the panthers a little cooler than I do the veileds and keep their humidity a little higher. I highly recommend you buy from Dez she is one of our site sponsors Chamalot Chameleons. She is a small breeder that really cares about her animals. You can see pictures of her set ups and a few of her animals here. https://www.chameleonforums.com/photos-repticon-orlando-12-17-11-a-72313/

Good to know, I've heard that screened habitats can hurt their noses, and only bird-cages should be used... Is this true? Or just a myth?

Thank you, Jann! I will look into Dez. I saw her Chamalot Chameleons pic for the reptile show, looks like she loves what she is doing!

As far as I know screen cages are perfect for panthers as they'll assure a good ventilation. It makes hard to keep a hight level of humidity though

That's a new one...most people use screen cages. If your Cham is always trying to get out then they can rub their nose too much, but that means you either need a bigger cage or need to redecorate so they feel safe in their home. Bird cages can be used, but the overwhelming majority uses screen. Humidity, drainage and keeping feeders in would be a challenge in a bird cage.

Ok great! I am wanting to build my own cage, but the chameleon book that I am reading told me that... sounded fishy, but I figured there were enough experienced panther owners on here to give me a clear answer. Thank you! :)

Make your cage with Aluminium screen! It wont rust & bugs can chew thru the nylon stuff. They have big rolls of it at most hrdwr stores.;) Unless your home alot, I recommend a misting system. Also, In addition to live plants I have found silk artificial plants to really help keeping the humidity up,, They soak up alot of moisture, not as much mist runs off. I like the Exo-Terra brand. I also like the Flukers Benda- Branch the most too, they look the most real.
