I found some for local pick up-will these work OK? I usually use the 40 hour ones that LLL sells.

they are definetly surface temps. THe 40 hr peaks at 110F, but generally will only raise boxes remps 5- 10 F above ambient. I have shipped in mild winter with 2 packs taped to the upper styrofoam with good results.
I can't speak from experience , but 1 of those 24 hr packs would probably equal 2 40 hr packs. Also , best to start them 3-5 hours earlier, as they consume oxygen when they are exposed to air. THey , supposedly , use up a fair bit when they start up.
I would suggest getting direct advise from anyone that has ysed them .
You can also set up a box with a pack inside tonight and close it up. Throw a thermometer into the empty box and see what the temp is in the morning.

I use the 24 hour ones at Dicks. Last week I shipped to NJ and GA from NC using the 24 hour heat packs with no prob. I have a couple shipments in the mail now, so nock on wood, but I think they are fine.

I use the 60 hour packs, mostly because if a shipment is 24 hours late, a 40 hour pack will be expired by the time the shipment gets there. I have also noticed the 60 hour packs don't get as hot as the 20-40 hour packs (and I prefer it that way). I worry more about overheating in the warehouses and trucks and the first few hours in transit than I worry about them getting too cold. Since Las Vegas is almost always warmer than where they're going, I usually open the packs immediately before putting them and the animal(s) in the boxes, so that the heat pack, in theory, isn't producing much heat in the time it takes them to get out of town. I place them red-stripe side down to slow the amount of oxygen that gets to the pack, also in an effort to start it up more slowly (the red side is supposed to be the exposed to oxygen side).

I need to ship today. I will use the 24 hour heat pack-I have never had a late shipment and they are going to your neck of the woods-temps are over 35 the entire way. But I will definitely order some 60 hour packs for the future!

I was right here, a phone call away! I don't even attempt to keep up with ChameleonForums anymore... I usually check the Lizard Lounge once a day and get back to my tortoises LOL...
