i'm considering getting a mesh screen cage so i can keep it outside since ive heard there better for air flow and for the uvb from the sun but i was wondering how i would keep it humid in the mesh cage?

Go to a store that sells stuff for kids. Get the stand up mister that costs about $10. Hook it to a hose. Turn it on as needed. Amount needed will depend on what type of cham you have.

Personally I wouldn't make a permanent enclosure for outside in New York. I would just make something to let your cham bask when weather is permitting. Now if you lived in Florida, or California where it is more tropical in nature it would work out better. If New York were a suitable habitat then Central park would be crawling with chams. "Just my opinion." Good luck maybe someone else will have more insight than me I have always kept mine inside for the most part more control over their environment that way especially in the north east. :)

The temps and humidity in NY may be OK for a cham in some months, but not for a lot of the year. You'll have to have an indoor setup for one anyway, so plan on that. If you have a garden with shade trees it might work for summer, but there are risks too. Wandering cats, rats, or larger birds like crows could get in to your cage and injure or kill your cham.

There is all sorts of info on caging, humidity, etc. in the care articles found under the Resources tab.

Is the terrarium one designed for herps or is it a converted fish aquarium? Herp terrariums usually provide better living space and ventilation than aquariums. What are the overall dimensions? The orientation of the terrarium matters, so describe it.

And also i have coconut fiber as the substrate and i was reading that its bad for them but what should i use as a substitute?

I don't use any substrate. It makes for easier clean up and I have read on several forums not to use any. I did at first but have since taken it out. Saves you some money too. :)

If your chameleon is a female, read up on egg laying. I am by no means an expert but I had a female who turned out to be older than I was told and she got egg bound and did not make it. Find out all the information you can so this does not happen to you. Veiled chameleons don't show signs of illness until they are very sick. I, also, did not know this. Since then, I have gotten a male and I have read every bit of information on this site. There is a lot and it's very helpful. Also, find a good vet if you don't have one already. Thats about all the friendly advice I have. Good luck! :)
