Need Help! First time Veiled with Eggs/Not laying!

eggbound

i would try potting soil not sand...i have had much success with soil instead of sand..it can block the cham and make the situation even more serious

she has been to the vet 3 times this week already. the vet has given me calcium shots and oxytocin shots to induce her and try to get her to push them out. she has not been straining to push (not once have i seen her even attempt to try) or even try to dig. i have given her 5 doses of oxy so far and am waiting to see how she does with this dose. the vet says it usually takes between 5 and 7 doses to get them to get them out. hoping that she will do ok these next few hours!

palpitate

if you SERIOUSLY know what you are doing you can try to gently palpitate for a while..i may help.. but only if you know EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING!

sixth dose done. she wasnt moving much, but she did have a strong grip on the paper towel when i put her back in. she listed to the left a bit when i set her down, i dont know if that is a good sign or a bad one. she did attempt to hiss at me when i turned on the light as well. (i have it dark for privacy) when i picked her up, i noticed some white stuff coming out. in no way shape or form did it look anything like an egg that i have seen on other posts. its way small (about the size of a baby pea) and it was mixed in with dark brown stuff (i am guessing fecal matter) which was kinda runny. i rinsed it off with some water and sprayed her down. but to not stress her out further, i didnt take any picures of her this time (she did turn brown when i picked her up...she dosnt seem to happy this time, which might be an improvement as well) i will take more pictures in a few more hours (maybe if she makes it to 8th dose)

I dont know how to do that, so i am not going to try. all i did was grab the stuff that was coming out and pull. she seemed to be a bit better after that...i didnt see anything in the laying hole as of yet. this is the first time i have seen anything come out of her for the last 3 days!

Meds

i woud lay off the meds...add way much stress..let her feel it out..if no eggs in 24 hrs. or digging, she needs to see vet asap

vet told me 10 doses then lay off for 24-48 hours. I wish that i knew more about this kind of topic but i am not a vet and it seems that this is a topic that is different for each girl and has different reactions for each girl. (kinda like humans) this is why i am documenting it. no where on any forum have i seen someone go into detail on what they did while their girl was not laying. i am hoping that this can help someone who might have similar problems as we are. Either way, whatever happens, she will be seeing a vet at 8am tomorrow morning when they open. they do not have too many exotic (cham) vets here where i live, unfortunatly. Thank you for the advice though. I will keep an eye on her and if she shows signs of slipping back to how she was before (not moving at all, we had to see if she was breathing most of the day and no grip) to she is moving her head a little now and gripping the paper towel when i pick her up...she even hissed at me a bit earlier, which is a huge improvement. if she shows signs of slipping back, i will def lay off, and blog about it... with pictures.

She Lived! :D

Well, at 2am, i went to check up on her and she was laying inside her laying hole and was breathing, but not moving. she looked very tired and exhausted so i forgoed the last few shots till this morning (if she made it thru) and let her sleep. This morning I woke up at 630am to see how she is doing and she looked ok. she was breathing! (VERY GOOD TO SEE) and she still had color. she actually opened her eyes at me and complained when i picked her up from her cage. i sprayed her down with some water and let her relax/soak it up for a few minutes (she did open her mouth for a few drops). after that, i took some more pictures (which she hissed at me in a few!-i will post after this writings) and gave her another oxy shot. she actually moved when i gave her the shot. one thing i do want to mention is that when you give the cham the oxy shot, they will develop a large black "bruise" around the area of the shot. it didnt happen for the first few shots, just after the shots got to have more in them. after about 40 minutes, the black goes away. I hope this helps someone out there in the same situation as Freddy.

Sometimes when the female does not lay they will absorb their eggs. An antibiotic is used to prevent a secondary peritonitis while the chameleon reabsorbs the eggs. Steroids can also help with any secondary inflammation or even non-steroidal drugs like Metacam help too.

Some keepers choose surgery and some chams survive and some do not.

She may try to absorb the eggs, when i saw her at 1am last night, she had a bright white mucus coming out (i thought it might have been an egg, but it was way too small for an egg, i do have pictures of it) here are the pictures from 2am-right before the shot to right after the shot (black ring).

Probably not going to make it...

After the last bunch of pictures, i gave her some oxy and put her back in her cage. the vet opened in an hour and was going to take her anyway. when the hour was up, she came out with her head all black, i thought it was the sand mix, but it wasnt dripping off of her when i sprayed her with water. she wasnt moving again and she looked worse than she did the hour before. when i checked the hole, there was a brown circle in the hole, but it didnt look healthy at all. i called the vet and told them i was bringing her in. while i was on the phone with the vet, freddy stuck out her tounge and took a deep breath but didnt bring her tounge back in. it stayed out. that worried me even more. i rushed her to the vet and the vet said that she was still alive, they did hear a heartbeat. she didnt look well at all. they gave her a saline solution mixed with electrolites (sugar water) and got the same solution for a drip on her tounge to make sure that she didnt have her tounge dry out. The vet mentioned that her eggs might have burst (after seeing the pictures that i took throughout the night) and it is like a burst appendix. nothing one can do, she probably will not make it. i do have pictures of the final hours if anyone wants them. I do not want to post any more. Thank you all for your help.

"Freddy" is no more...

The vet just called and said that she didnt make it. She said that it was terrible ordeal but it just happens to some chams. most people dont know why this happens as there is little to no knowledge of why. i asked her if she would be willing to do a autopsy to see why she passed and why she had such problems with her eggs. she said that she would love to do one as she is curious as to why this happens as well. I asked her to contact me when she was done with the autopsy. I will get as much information as i can from her before I post my last post so it can be known as to what happens with an egg bound cham.

I'm so sorry that she didn't make it. She kept looking worse in the pics after the injections. It had to be a very painful death for her.:(

From the Vet (Autopsy)

The vet said that Freddy was very healthy. This is a quote from the documentation: Post Mortem liver looked normal. The abdomen was full of eggs but there was also free yolk in the abdomen. The lungs and air sacs looked clear. The intestinal tract was very dark in color, but there was no blood in the feces.
The vet also mentioned on the phone that she had an egg burst internally, which is akin to having an appendix burst. There is nothing one can do except surgury and they do not recommend surgery on a cham for any reason. She said with as weak as she was, she probably wouldnt have made it past the surgery either. I asked for a copy of the xrays, I will post them as soon as I get them on my computer and uploaded. If anyone has any questions, please dont hesitate to email me or message me. Thank you all for your help during this trial period.

Tzimisces I am very sorry to hear that Freddy didn't make it. :( I havea female Veiled also and I am most worried for when it comes time for her to lay her first batch. Shes about a year old and hasn't laid any eggs yet...so hopefully if all goes well she wont lay any for a long time. Do you plan on getting another Chameleon?

Yes, my husband and I talked about it yesterday and we have agreed to wait a few months and then get another one. We dont know yet if we want another female though. One piece of advice I will give you is to get your veiled looked at by a vet at least every 6 months and weigh her every month on a digital scale. (thats the only way to see if she has eggs) I thought she was too young at 7 months old to have eggs, but she was full of them! When I took her for her check up in January, she was 86g, when I took her again this month she was 138.5g! Good luck with your girl! :D They are very rewarding creatures!
