A female praying mantis. Looks full grown. They make interesting pets. LMK if you are interested in the details of care.

Probably just a Tenodera sinensis or Chinese Mantis. They come in brown and green, but it looks to be just a common American mantis which is usually the Chinese Mantis (which I guess doesn't make it an American mantis, but you catch my drift :D). That or Sphodromantis viridis the African Mantis, both are fairly similar.

Yeah I may keep it as a pet for a bit. How long do they live for?

They usually live for about a year. If you keep it, it may live a little longer, but they are biologically set up to be born, eat, mate, and then die at about the time it starts frosting pretty heavily.

Hah isn't everything in America these days really Chinese? Hah, don't see those up here in WI, but is it possible to order those guys online somehow or is it illegal?

I dont think it is chinese it is stagmomantis, aka carolina mantis female, chinese have brown outer wings. If it has a black dot on its wing then it is carolina

Who told you this nonsense? Myth

Yeah, I had heard this all the time when I was a kid. I guess someone thought that an invasive species was important and started throwing out rumors.

I haven't seen the sold, but if you have any bushes around your house you can usually find egg sacks. They are very noticeable, easily broken off with a little of the branch and in the early spring, you'll have hundreds of the little buggers running around.

I love praying mantis. You know they are the only insect that can turn their heads. Very specialized insects. So that being said..I couldn't imagine feeding them of to my cham.

I just got a couple pet mantids for the first time. They're super cute. My creobroter tilts his head when I look at him. He also likes honey on a toothpick.

I know..I love the way that they look at you and move their heads around like they're really interested in what you're doing. I never new that they would like honey..always thought of them as insectivores.
