My trip to the vet

Hello everyone, just wanted to share a short recap of my visit with the vet today.

First, a little background. We got Vanessa about two years ago from cainschams here on the board. She is in a screen cage that is 2x2x3' tall with a large schef plant inside. Her cage is part of a line of cages I built and has a mist king system hooked up that runs twice a day for 5 minutes each time. She has a dual light with a 6500k and an old repti sun that needs to be replaced......and yes I ordered a new one that will be here Friday

She has been on a diet of discoid roaches and crix with an occasional hornworm. I have not been the best at dusting, but usually do twice a week calcium with d3. I have started gutloading better than I have in the past. I cup feed her and she usually runs right over to the cup to eat....actually when I bred her last year, she ran over and ate all the males roaches in his cup before she let him approach her! She laid that clutch at the start of November and retained some sperm and had another clutch in march.

Well, we went on vacation for a bit and the neighbor took care of the Chams while we were gone. When I came back home, Vanessa was sitting in the bottom of her plant, not like her at all. I tried putting her back in the tree a few times but within a few hours she was back down again. You can see swollen joints in her back right leg. She can still grip with it pretty good.

I made an appointment with dr entriken at Kansas city vet care.

We stayed with the vet for 20 mins and talked the entire time. He said there were a few possibilities. MBD of course, but also could be start of gout, or while we were gone she could of fallen off her tree and we didn't know. She didn't show any signs of pain while he was manipulating her joints.

We decided to go with two medications. She is now on .05ml melocicam and .1pm calcionate. The antinflammatory for two weeks and the calcium till it runs out.

The office visit costs $45 and the meds totaled $15

I will post pics of her and her joints when I get home, I'm not sure how to do it from my phone yet.

Thoughts and comments are always welcome.

I would recommend you have your vet, if he/she is a good chameleon vet, to take an xray and some blood work to find out what the problem is instead of guessing and treating with meds that might not be needed. The meds might end up making your cham worse.

Agreed. My vet did this same thing to me. Went to another vet and he did the blood work and turned out not to be gout and just a small injury. She could have eggs again, have you tried putting her in a laying bin and see if she starts digging?

That was my first thought, so I did put her in her egg laying bin which she has used a couple of times before. She showed no interest at all the last three times I tried.

She already seems better today. She was up in the tree all day.

And as a positive, my new light arrived today!
