My new enclosure for my new Ambilobe male.

Well this past saturday i was supposed to pick up my new Ambilobe male BUT my cage wasnt completely done so i opted to have my local breeder hold him (www.chameleonkingdom.com) and I should be picking him up on Wednesday (and yes ill be posting tons of pics lol). What do you guys think of my cage i built? Its 24x24x39. The lights and stuff arent pictured cause its not currently on the stand ill permanently have it on. The drip system is all ready to plug into my main line cause i have a small pump that has water lines running to the other cages and its all on one system and they drip rapidly 3 times a day for one hour and when the pump isnt putting pressure behind the dripper it drips slowly so they still have access to water. I made the system off a $4 fountain pump and its worked great so far. The screening is to big for free roaming insects so he'll be cup fed. Thoughts, suggestion, cool? What do you guys think?

Thanks
Nic

Cage looks great-hope you water proofed that nice fresh wood or else you will have nice fresh moldy wood! :)

Very nice work indeed. If you don't mind me asking, where did you get the pvc screen? Get a decent price on it?

I didnt waterproof the wood!:eek::eek:!!! Im a weekly cage cleaner so if i keep a close eye on the wood and see to it i scrub off any forming mold you think that'll be ok? If it proves to be a problem over time ill remove the screen and waterproof it with polyurethane. The pvc screening i got from lowes for $11 for a roll of 15ft i think it was. The cage including the plant cost me $40 to build. I like that screening cause even though i can free roam insects, an adult cham can firmly crab ahold of the screen without sliding down or falling like ive seen with the smaller screening.

My guess is it won't be OK-with the amount of water you end up putting on it it will get yucky pretty fast and it is a nice cage. I would either paint it or use the waterproofing stuff-but it will need to dry and be fume free-you may need a temporary enclosure for your new guy!

use a spar varnish and do about 5 good coats. I am using that to waterproof the cage. I will also start a how to thread when i am finished this week or monday tuesday next week

Thanks for the suggestions! Tomorrow i dont have class until 8pm so ill remove the screen, waterproof it and put it back on. How many days should i allow the waterproofing to cure? Ive been planning to pick him up on saturday will this be possible if i do all the waterproofing tomorrow?

And a good 2 or 3 coats will be plenty, 5 is a little overkill, but if you dont have anything else to do have at it...

ill tell ya what. chameleons destroy those plants.
every single little branch with leaves is facing straight down.
My veileds is pretty big though.

I have an almost full spray can if KRYLON crystal clear coating. I originally bought it for some paintball stuff and when sprayed it gives everything a really hard plastic like coating thats waterproof. Im gonna slap a few coats of that stuff on and see how it does. It says its primary use is on wood so i think it'll work out.

Be carefull with that mesh. I bought the same stuff to make my cage and change my mind because I like to lay the lights pretty close to the top of the cage. That mesh is pure plastic and will melt VERY quickly if the light is close to it and then you'll have a big hole where the cham can get up and touch the light.

Other than that it is looking good!

haha i found that first hand when i set my 100w basking light on top for like 10min to cook some food and smelled plastic and caught it just in time before it melted through. It cooled down and the plastic set up again. The light will be about 8 inches above the cage anyway and will produce a 95 degree basking spot on one perch in the cage.

edit-thanks for the compliment though!

If it's the same pvc mesh I've had a heat light on for 16 years, I'm gonna have to disagree with the melting comment. It is great to use with bigger chams. No lost toenails and it is very sturdy. I didn't know Lowe's was selling it. Thanks for the info :)

100 watts?? What's wrong with a lower wattage bulb that won't produce such high heat? I have never used anything higher than 60 watts with chameleons!

Cause i like to have LOTS of visual light. The live plants tend to look nicer(ie less dead leave and such) and grow well when i make sure the cage is well lit.

Nothing wrong with that, but I use flourescents for plants. They are lower wattage and I believe those bulbs will be more beneficial to the plants than a hot basking light.

i like your stones, i use hydroton but the stones have a nicer effect I think, and hydroton is possible to ingest if say a cricket has a good grip.

your cham is def a happy one :)
