My melleri likes the company of other chams

My reptile room is where I house most of my chameleons. Melle, my melleri-male has his glass enclosure with a free range. Across the room are the enclosures of my pair quadricornis, to the left my panther K and next to K is Jack, my ousti male, and next to Jack is Pete, my veiled.

All my animals can see Melle, and Melle can see them. They're perfectly fine with that. Interested, but no stress or whatsoever. It is this way for a couple of months now.

About a month ago, i placed my Quad pair in the outside enclosure, to stay there all summer. But because of the heavy rains and winds this last week, i decided to put them inside for a couple of days. Since I placed the pair outside, Melle didnt eat that well, and it made me wonder why.. I was a bit worried about that. Normally he eats very well. He refused to eat most of the feeders i offered.

From the moment I put my Quad pair back and offered them food out of a cricket container.. he started eating as well ;). He seems very happy to have his neighbours back.

I think this is cute, but I want to put my pair back outside again. Should i just do this and see how it goes this time?

I'd put them back out and see what Melle does. You need a big free range for all of them. :) I have a friend that's mellers and her male veiled all free range together. It's weird how these animal sometime can really take to each other.

That is very interesting!

We have Meller's as well and find them to be very social. They will communicate ultrasonically without you realizing it. We have also witnessed serious separation anxiety and also slow death following the loss of a mate. They really thrive with social discourse. The colors of your quadricornis are probably appealing socially to your Melleri and so he would feel comfortable with them. I am not surprised that his behavior changes when they are gone from the room. It's a tricky situation but it could affect his health. Relationships seem to be very critical to their health and happiness. Whereas many other chameleons couldn't care less if there were another cham in the room.

Thank you all for you replies!

I also think that the colors of my quads are appealing to him.

And Jann, i am seriously thinking about a large free range for Melle and see how this goes by putting the other ones in there as well. I want to use the whole room as a free range. Still have to think about a good misting system and what to do with the floor in that room :D.

I am also going to build an large outside enclosure for him, so he can see the quads, who are outside again for the summer days!
