My male veiled past away today.

He past away with his tongue sticking out. I don't know if he was stressed out but he had his own cage for 3-4 days. Had them for a month almost exactly.... female is healthy and active.. but yet feisty. The male was showing a nice light green with turq. blue few weeks ago. He was also tame, I would handle him for few minutes. I hardly handled the chameleons. I'm going to the reptile show this coming weekend and I'm going to find me a good looking male veiled. I am still disappointed tho :( ahh this sucks

thanks bro.. thanks for your concern. Here it is. I took pictures but forgot my password.

Cage Info:

* Cage Type - Describe your cage construction (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions? screen 18x18x36
* Lighting - What brand, model, and type of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule? 18" reptisun uvb 5.0, 150 baskin lamp but I have a dimmer and turn it down half way because 150 watt was overkill. I turn the lights on 9:30am to 10:00 pm
* Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? around 90 degree basking, room temp/bot cage is 75-80. Night time can be cold.. around 65. I have many thermo and hydro. digitals.Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
* Humidity - What are your humidity levels? 45% - 85%. I mist 3 times a day. Sometimes 2 times a day depending on my work schedule. I bought a mistking so misting won't be a problem. I have a zilla that measures the humid.
How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
* Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind? Yes, ficus ..washed, resoiled and put rocks over the soil.
* Location - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor? Its in my room. I live downstairs.. Its away from the window tho but next to a small vent. Roughly 3-4 feet away from the vent. I have the two cages on an ikea table

Chameleon Info:

* Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care? A male veiled. I ordered it as a baby but I believe he is around 4-5 months olds, thats my guess. Its in my care for 1 month!!

* Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? Crickets and couple of wax worms. Mainly crickets.. I bought massive amount of crickets. Put in bin.. gut load with Flukes.. also spinach, lettuce and apple. I drop in about 20 a day. thats sharing with the female.. I housed them together. How are you gut-loading your feeders? The first week i only used d3! i know thats bad. then i use multivitamins and rep-cal without d3. I switch around everyday.
* Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?
* Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?mist frequently, lately I didn't see them drink.
* Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?never got tested for parasites. i bought them CB. few time there was a bit of orange but the rest of the time its brown/white.
* History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.got it from online store
* Current Problem - The current problem that you are concerned about.

I would guess I either over supplement him, or gave him too much heat and less mist?? In the beginning he was doing better then the female.. I housed them together because I thought they would be able to live with each other for another 2-3 months! The reason why I thought this because I order "babies" but they were about 3-3.5 inches already when I got them. After 2 weeks having them the male did spent a lot of time on the ground. He was crawling all over the place.. I thought he was just exploring his enclousre. Then week 3, female would open her mouth if he is near but then later they ignore each other. At times they would eat and hunt for food together. I seperated them 4 days ago.. The cage is next to each other but I use a board to block them from seeing each other. I am a bit disappointed and I did do my best for them. I should of taken him to the vet but I saw some sign that he was opening his eyes and crawling around.. But he didn't eat or drink water.

sorry to here that.i cant imagine losing mine.u get so attach to them suckers,u know.again, sorry for ur loss.

Sounds like too much supplementation was at least a contributing factor to me. Also feeding the crickets spinach may interfere with calcium absorption.

So were they living together until 3 or 4 days ago? Maybe he was too stressed by the time you gave him his own cage. Moving them into new places also freaks them out sometimes.

shoot dude, Your care looks right on...:)

May be it was stress related?

the supplementation schedule you had might have been excessive but it wasn't really sustained for a very long time and I would assume the supplementation schedule was the same for your girl too. That would lead me to the question, how is your Girl doing? Any Signs and Sx that would tell you that she is on the same road? (HOPE NOT:().

Do You plan to necropsy?

Hope everything is well with you....

Yeah the thing was I housed them together. One would eat more then the other on different days. I make sure both of them have big bellies. I seperate them 4 days ago because the male didn't look to well. On my other thread I posted that he had one eyes close... later on he had both of them close.. I gave him a warm shower and he would open his eyes here and there to move. So I put him on the same setup but umbrealla tree instead. A huge one that I bought from home depot for 12 bucks which I thought was a steal!! Anyhow female is doing alright, she is pretty fat like she is pregnant. In most cases I thought female would be likely to stress more then a male? I thought males were more aggressive also? But I do see the female open her mouth and hiss at him if he gets too close. Now i'm debating if I should get another veiled.

Hmm...new plant? May be some pesticides?:(

BTW - Even in the human species, the male is normally the first to go:eek:....( you must be unmarried - (I am just kidding) LOL:D)

It may just be that the female was more dominant....Well hopefully she is pregnant and you will have more chams than you anticipated:eek:.
:p:D

haha I doubt she is pregnant. Shes just fat. Yeah true the male always go first but he was too young. It is known for the human race that male stresses out the most! Yeah I'm not married because if I was the cham would defin. not be in my bedroom. HAHA and roaches.

here is the pic.

So sorry for your loss.
I am not sure if this what directly caused your cham to die.
But, seems to me an order of dominance already established in the enclosure.

The female seems to dominate the male.
That might inflict serious stress to your boy and in the end, he succumbed to it.

Can you post a picture of the female please?
How long is she nose to tail-tip?

You sound like you are feeding her quite a bit....if you are feeding her too much it can lead to egglaying problems, constipation, prolapse, large clutches, etc.

First, i am so sorry to hear about you losing your little boy. It really stinks!!!

Second, like was already stated, your set up doesn't look that bad, except of course for housing them together. That imo might very well be the cause. Stress is a terrible thing for these guys.

Third, It also could depend on where and who you buy them from. I recently sold 1 male and 2 females to someone only to find out later he was intending to breed them knowing they were brother and sister. His reply " I do it all the time". I wish i could have taken them back. So sometimes you can do everything right but if you don't start with a healthy baby your doomed before you start.

When you went to the show did you get another boy?

Debby

Thanks for the replies you guys. I'm going to the show this sat and I am determin to get another one. I bought the ch from lllreptiles. As stated the female is doing fine. Will post a pic of her soon. He might of been stressed from the female I wouldn't know cause I give them a lot of privacy. The male never seemed stressed out when I handled him but the femAle did. Its my mistake for not separating them because I order the pair as baby and I assumed I had two to three months before separating them.
