My little girls eggbound :(

I took Josie (female veiled about a year and a half old) to the vet Thursday since shes been acting lethargic, not eating etc. Thursday morning I thought she was dead so I rushed her to the vet. Her xrays as shown below obviously show shes full of eggs, but she never really scratched around on the floor, and Ive had sand and plenty of plants she could have layed eggs in. The vet gave me liquid calcium and canned dog food (hills a/d critical care) that i have to force feed her with through a syringe. She looks alot better, but still no eggs. Shes even in a room all by herself,door shut, huge container of wet sand with half of the top covered and a stick for her to get in, and I do not disturb her only to feed her. Today her stool had blood in it and I cannot get to the vet until tomorrow. Im thinking the vet should have gave her oxytocin and Im getting frustrated here. This is her first time laying and Im wondering if anyone can tell how developed the eggs are by the xray or what I should do to encourage laying.

If she can't lay the eggs she will need to be spayed. The problem is that by the time most people figure out that the female can't lay the eggs its too late. If the eggs are too big to be laid giving her oxytocin may do more harm than good. Its a difficult situation.

I was just in the same situation and sad to say mine didn't make it. It's so sad that my boy had to go through it and now you have too good luck tho I'll be praying your makes it out ok.

thats good to know. when I took her to the vet, over the phone they said they took exotics including chameleons. when i arrived and had already racked up a vet bill is when they she told me shes only ever worked on 2 or 3 and it was all for eye infections. she didnt even know that the eggs werent exactly calcified but more goopy...so idk if i wasted my money here or not. i feel like im just sustaining her (barely) force feeding her and giving her liquid calcium. i guess it just suprised me because i would have thought she would be showing some signs of mbd since shes having trouble laying. this might be a really stupid question, and more likely relative to ones location, but does anyone know the price range for getting a cham spayed? im hoping its going to be $400 and below...but either way i cant watch her suffer like this. i know i wouldnt want to be in her condition! and idk if this helps, but i bought her from the pet store...and im almost positive they lied about her age along with everything else they told me about her. now im well seasoned in all of this cham business...came along way from me being starry eyed in the petshop not knowing what on earth she was. i had her in a glass cage for about 4 months and then she has been free range ever since and doing great until now

Im sorry to hear you lost your cham that has to be so rough. These pet stores are really dirty and ONLY sell females, which from my personal experience, are harder to take care of and not for the average pet owner....thank you I really appreciate that. I will keep everyone updated...Im so nervous :x

Female veileds (and others) so often have egglaying issues or end up with MBD. Often its because the husbandry isn't bang on but even sometimes when it is they can still have reproductive issues (follicular stasis, reproductive tract issues, etc).

There was a study started a couple of years ago here in Canada and it resumed again this year to see if they could find a solution (or at least better understand the causes) for eggbinding and follicular stasis.

I just found this below from my book . Hope it help

"Egg-bound females can also be offered a few drops of calcium lactate (in a concentration of 15 grams per liter) or calcium gluconate in similar proportions. If things do not get any better by the next day, a few drop of mixture made out of water and Vaam powdwer(an amino acid mix used by athletes as a sport drink to enhance their endurance) has helped several of my egg bound female chamaeleonids."

Thanks guys Where do you buy this Vaam powder other than online? GNC maybe? Sounds safer than surgery.

If the eggs are too large to lay the calcium and Vaam will not help.
