My First Chameleon :)

Uhhhhh... what?..

You need a proper gutload.. and I can't exactly say Jello is a proper gutload....

Stuff like bee pollen, things low in oxalic acid... are good gutloading items. If you want to keep it simple can I suggest Cricket Crack?

ill use both in that case :)

update picture of him .

Notice the bow shape to his legs and possibly even the bend at the tip of his casque? That is metabolic bone disease and if you are going to keep him you will have to take him to the vet asap if you have not already. If you don't he will become even more deformed and his bones will turn into something like bendy straws (example). Imagine not being able to support yourself because your bones are so flexible, and imagine how much that must hurt! Either take him tot he vet or give him to someone who can. If you just bring him back to the store he will die, no if ands or buts.

I gave you a list of supplies so either get them or give him up. So many people jump into chameleons not knowing what they are doing, and many end up killing their chameleons because they did not follow the advice given to then exactly and skipped some things that were too expensive or just because they didn't think it mattered.

ima take him back tomorrow . let them get me a good one . even tho i love chameleons alot but its kind of fd up when people try to fk you over like that . what if i didnt post pictures of him on the forums , i would of never know about the MBD and he would die on me . tell me im wrong .

I would suggest getting your money back then and spending it on a much healthier one from one of our site sponsors. After you do ALL of your research and have ALL of the supplies of course.

It makes me really sad that you would return him. I completely agree that petstores overcharge your for sick animals (my local exotics store has an ill-kept and dehydrated veiled for sale for $300!) but if you take him back he'll probably just die. They aren't going to invest the money when they can replace him with 20 others.

My roommate bought a red iguana from a show a couple months ago for very little, and we thought it was awesome. But three weeks later she still hadn't eaten much and we didn't know why so we took her to the vet. Essentially, $360 later we cured her of a horrible impaction (intestinal blockage) and other smaller health problems. Did it hurt to invest that much? Hell yea, but now we have a healthy animal that would have died otherwise and that seems like a small price to pay for that. You know, we gave her another 10-20 years of life she would have lost otherwise.

I urge you to think about it. Or at the very least give her away to someone who will invest the time and money, because the store will basically let him die.

Better to bring him back and give the store a reality check than let them replace him with 20 or more others who will end up the same.

I would first go to the store and check the setup if they have the proper UVB, even if there is one it might not be giving off UVB anymore as UVB tubes "expire" after about 6 months.
Then check what they are feeding the chameleons, are the crickets dusted with calcium or what?

After this if you see they arent using UVB and dont dust the crickets for them, then you its pretty safe to think that he has just got a normal MBD due to no D3 supplements, no UV exposure or both.

Then it is easy to get him to recovery, what I used to get 1 of my females to recover was TREX liquid calcium or bone aid I cant quite remember that name but its one of those 2.

Give the cham 1 drop a day and it should recover in a couple of weeks.

Then have a chat with the store owner or whoever does the reptiles and tell them their proper requirments for survival, but it seems that could be hard since you dont know to much about them either, maybe you should do alot of research and get that done, ay?

Good luck

I would go yell at them, let them know what they did - I would even contact animal services about it with photos, vet records, and other evidence - and let them know it was not alright to keep their animals this way. However, I personally would keep him. But if you don't know much about chameleons at this point it might be tough. I don't recommend you get another one right away, however.

from what ive seen, the pet stores either have their animals set up correctly, which is rare, and obviously there's no need to talk to them, or they don't, and in that situation they could care less what anyone has to say about it.
