My First Chameleon :)

yeah first rule for any chameleon buyer....never buy from a store. they dont know how to care for them.(usually..... specialized store/ breeder is different) and people that dont know what to look for as far as sickness goes pay full price for a chameleon, with a sever case of metobalic bone dissease or any other sickness..... like this one.....ughhhh

the reason I said that the person in question should take the advice of a vet at this time and not just add more calcium with D3 is because if by chance the reason the cham has MBD is because of calcificatin of it's orgins, then adding more D3 can be more harmful.

MBD is a generic term that can happen for lots of reasons.

as such, you have to find out if it is caused because of a lack of supliments, or too much.
treatment will be different for each case and just giving extra calcium or D3 can be more harmful in some cases.

it is important to remember that we are not vets and we don't have the tools to find out the reason WHY this cham is suffering from MBD.
as such, I don't like to give advice in treatment for this animal...again, as it could be far more harmful.

Things like this bug me. You have a pet store selling sick animals at a higher price, and then you have to pay for vet bills too.. Go back to that pet store and kindly ask they help pay for or pay in full for your vet bills.

Chameleons with MBD have usually been underexposed to UVB light and/or not supplemented properly. You can easily tell by the bent legs and bowing of the legs in your cham. If you want to take on the challenge or this particular cham-he needs to see a vet. His legs will not straighten out but he may live a semi-normal life. Without treatment and proper UVB and supplements, the disease will advance affecting his internal organs and will eventually kill him.

It's your choice what you do, but I highly suggest doing some research on what a healthy chameleon looks like before getting another. Please bring up the fact the chameleon has MBD and ask that they get him on treatments before putting him back up for sale.

cuz i when there yesterday they told me bring it back if you want . if i dont take it back than ima have to take it to the vet and spend a lot of money , they are not going to pay for the vet so ima just gonna take it back tomorrow :( and get better one . i kind of know what to look now thanks to you all
my friends . i will post some pictures of the new one when i get it .
 
i sugest before you even think about another chameleon you do research. if you couldnt even diagnose a MAJOR ISSUE with mbd with your naked eye, you need more experiance. you really need to research health/ housing / overall care of a true chameleon before you jump in. please do it for the sake of the chameleon and your wallet. i know this sounds harsh but it needs to be done.
 
well i got the cage 2ft by 4ft . i got the 100w heat/uva i got the 5.0 uvb and calcium d3 and i feed the crickets with vitamins .

what else do i need ? please help
 
digital thermometer & hygrometer, mist king misting system( optional but highly reccomended), a dubia roach colony(optional)

what do you gut load your crickets with?
 
List of supplies recommended/essential:
-Screen cage ( you have one)
-digital temperature gauge, hygrometer
-Mist King(highly recommended) or hand held squirt bottle for misting multiple times a day
-Drip system, you can get one from a store, make one out of a plastic jug, or put ice cubes on the screen top.
-Rep-cal calcium dust w/o vit d3 or phosphorus
-Rep-cal calcium dust with d3
-Herptivite
-Heat lamp and bulb
-Long linear tube light fixture and reptisun linear 5.0 tube bulb
-Many vines and plants to climb on and hide in
-Crickets, dubia roaches, hornworms, silkworms, locus or a mixture for primary feeders
-Superworms, butterworms, waxworms for treats
-Fresh fruits and veggies such as kale, romaine lettuce, carrots, grapes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, bananas, and sweet red peppers.
-A complete feeder dry diet is also recommended such as "cricket crack"
-Extra money for any vet visits it might need

am I missing anything?
 
how many times do i need to give him calcium dust with and w/o d3 a week ?
and i do have the Drip system 4 now .
the only thing i dont have right now is digital temperature gauge, ill get it asap ,phosphorus thats all i think

Uhhhhh... what?..

You need a proper gutload.. and I can't exactly say Jello is a proper gutload....

Stuff like bee pollen, things low in oxalic acid... are good gutloading items. If you want to keep it simple can I suggest Cricket Crack?
