My First BB FLy Experience!

Picked up some BB Fly Pupae last week and went ahead and let a coupe dozen hatch out this morning. Opened up the container in the screened cage and BAM, it was on!!

Glad to be able to now add an additional feeder to the mix.

I have been reviewing some past posts and other bits of info on how to best hatch out, gutload, and then feed the flies, but would love to see or hear about anyone's current methods.

Thanks in advance!

Mine never stinks.
I put the pupae in a round plastic clear container with vented lid.

Put a 2oz deli cup inside that with their food.
This is how I make their food:

honey
Gerber strained peach baby food (or other fruit baby food)
prepared Repashy Bug Burger
calcium power
spirulina powder

Mix it all together very well.

I keep the flies in the fridge at 45F until feeding time, when I take them out and let them sit at room temp a few hours, long enough for them to stuff their disgusting little fly tummies with goodness :D

All my chams LOVE flies, and it's great fun to watch them :)

I have never noticed any bad smell using a 10'' x 3'' container, well vented.

I haven't had them ever smell either.

I use a fly food powder from mantis pets that has multiple ingriedients including bee pollen and also place some orange in there. You can put a tiny plastic cup in the big deli cup w the food and then just throw the pupae in the deli cup and wait for them to hatch. My Jackson loves bb flies.

i believe they have fly hatch cups on mantisplace. the place where u buy mantis. you gotta find it but you just put them in the container and leave them in the cage

My Nosy Be, Ego, LOVES him some BB Flies! I can't hardly get them out of their hatch container before he's picking them off one by one, sometimes right out of the container.

Yep, my Jackson absolutely goes bonkers for BBs. Does anyone know the nutritional content of these flies by chance?

Thanks for the detailed explanation. A couple of things:

1. When you say you are keeping the flies in the fridge until you feed them off, is this just for a few minutes until they slow down or for an extended period of time?

2. Can you share any pics of the containers you breed/keep them in?

Thanks so much!!
