my female chameleon died

I had first got two chameleon in 2010 when one of my roommates friends bought them and left them at our house because he couldnt keep them in his barracks room. I ended up taking care of them from that point on. Everything was going fine until last july. My female started staying on the ground all the time. Being new to chameleons, it took me a while to figure out that she was pregnant. I ended up setting up a soil tank temporarily so she could lay the eggs. She laid ten and then did not lay anymore for a day or two, so i put here back in the tank thinking she was done. She ended up dying a few days later and you could tell that she still had eggs inside her. Flash forward to now, I had bought another female to keep my male company (he acted really weird after she died) and everything was good for seven months. This female started to lay on the ground all the time so I figured she was pregnant. I put her in a tank with soil (neither cold or hot) with proper lighting and she didnt do anything for a few days. I put her back in her cage and a couple of days later, she was dead, but had laid two eggs onto the cage bottom. The cage is ventilated, I dont over feed them, I dust their crickets every other feeding, I clean out their water bowl daily (while also adding vitamin drops), I feed them wax worms, and I spray them with vitamin mist for their coat and water for them to drink. I feel really bad and having happened twice, there must be something I did wrong. Any tips on what I did?

P.S the ten eggs from last year, seven of them hatched recently and all was going well until a few days ago,and now three have died. I have them in a tank with a screen because the fruit flies I feed them are small enought to escape, but i dont give them that much light and they have plenty of water, misted water and things to crawl on. I love animals (Ive got 4 firebelly toads, 2 guinea pigs, a dog, a cat, and a 37 gallong aquarium with goldfish) so this whole situation has made me feel really bad. My male is fine, but im worried im doing something wrong. I wish I would have found this website earlier, so maybe this could have been prevented.

Hi, I'm sorry your chameleon died. Jbujarski is correct, you're going to want to fill in the form. To me it sounds like you had your male and female chameleon in the same cage. Unless the enclosure is very, very large (6 feet tall, 4 feet by 4 feet....something like that) I don't think that was a good idea. It's very likely that the female was constantly under stress (even though she might have hung around him...). The stress would be especially great when the female was pregnant. When breeding chameleons, the male and female are usually only together for mating.

I agree, i am sorry your chameleon died, and no matter what size
It's not "good" to have two chameleons in one enclosure.
U should fill out the page so we can help better. :(

The females are getting stressed out by the male and dieing as a result... The females can not live a healthy life with a male constantly there stressing them out. Chameleons should always be housed alone except in certain species and veileds and panthers are not one of them.

Sorry to be harsh but two chams have died from being housed with the male. It is a common mistake to thing they live in groups but the fact of the matter is they just need to live alone.

I am sorry about your girls....on another note chameleons dont recognize standing water. you have to mist them 3-4 times a day for a few minutes each time to have them drink. or set up a dripper. I would fill out the help form and we can help you save these babies hopefully!
