My Chameleon is sick i think. please help...

Sure hope so because the poor kids didn't look so good, I am sure if they went to a Vet they would work out a payment plan and if they wouldn't I'd call around until I found one that would, there are good Vets out there with good hearts!

I can tell you now they aren't gonna make it. That's exactly what my first cham looked like the day he died. He died because of a big abcess between his eyes. Even with quality vet care,there was nothing that could be done for mine. Yours is the direct result of lack of knowledge/experience/ just plain cham common sense. I know some of these posts are harsh, but people in general dont like to see needless suffering. Its bad for the animals and for the people who experience it with you. We are all used to mostly healthy animals with a few exceptions that is just nature and can't be helped. Needless suffering is hard on us all.

1.are you going to fill out the "how to ask for help" form???! you are only making it worse for you and your chameleons if you dont fill it out.
2. your chameleons should not be housed together. they are probably extremely stressed out.
3. the cage looks bone dry, mist it for at least 5 minutes.
4. your chameleon's leg looks deformed, it could be MBD.
5. the compact bulb is hurting its eyes.
6.they should not be in a glass cage. they are probably overheated and suffocating.
7. add more plants.

I'm amazed that it took 14 posts before anyone realized that this chameleon is suffering from a bad case of MBD. Congratulations, Metric!

Burrainiac ...welcome to the forum! Its unfortunate that this has happened but I don't want to rake you over the coals for it...the important thing to me is to help you, not chase you away. That won't help the chameleon or you.

Please fill out the help questions listed by some of the forum members so we can help you correct anything that is wrong with your set-up and husbandry.

First of all be aware that I am not a vet and anything I say comes from experience, what I have read and learned from others. The best option for this chameleon is a visit to the vet NOW. The vet can do some tests, give it injections of calcium until the blood calcium levels are high enough and then give it a shot of calcitonin to draw the calcium rapidly back into the bones. This would be the best and quickest way to get it back on track.

In the meantime...if you are to have a hope of saving this chameleon you need to act quickly.... you need to correct the calcium imbalance. It affects not only the bones but the muscles and other things in the chameleon's system.

You can buy liquid calcium sandoz or calcium gluconate at a pharmacy. It should not have other things like D3, etc. in it...just calcium. You will need a needleless syringe to give it to the chameleon and you will need to give it carefully to it too. I'm sorry I can't tell you how much. If it drinks when you drip water slowly on its nose, you can ease some of the calcium in as it drinks. Be careful...the calcium liquid is syrupy and hard for the chameleon to swallow.

Don't overdo the feeding to begin with...the gut/intestines will likely be moving slowly due to not eating and due to the calcium issues affecting the muscles.

In addition to getting the calcium back into balance, you need to make corrections to the cage and husbandry to keep the chameleon healthy.

ok sdo i just built them a big screen cage and am moving them into it now i have some nice hanging plants for them but what should i do for the sick one? just leave it in the plant and let it sleep?

im sorry but i am not sure how to handle a very sick cham, due to the fact i never had an incident like yours, and my only tactic is go to a good vet

but for now i guess at least the screen cage helps , spray some water ion him like if giving him a shower, use warm water ....hopefully more people can chime in to help ....i wish you and your chams the best

I agree with Kinyonga. Its meaningless posts like these, poor attitudes, assumptions, and egos that drive a lot of these people IN NEED away. I hate seeing threads where the OP is " raked over the coals" countless times without any useful information posted.

To the OP. Kinyonga gave great advise to try and stop the chameleons from going down hill even quicker. You really do need to see a GOOD vet for both of them. See if you can set up a payment plan with them. If not, there are rescues out there that will give the chams proper treatment. Veileds are tough and probably the most easily saved when things are not in check.

Feel free to PM me or any of the other members who gave you advise without acting like they are above you. Im sure any of us will be glad to help you in a respectful manner.

Where do you live? Natural sunlight is one of the best things you can give your chams at this point. Although you want to monitor them. If they are not mobile they will not be able to move in and out of the sun as they get hot.
