I was cleaning out my Dubia cage today and looked over to see Levi on the drainpan balancing his back leg over to edge in the corner and he had one leg hangin out solo, and he was poopin in the drain pan. (Mind you there is no water in the drainpan so he can't fall and drown!) But I let him finish his business and then went to investigate and sure enough there are a couple piles in the bottom of it. Then i checked the plant and nothing in there. So he is actually climbing down a 48" cage to go to the bathroom! I have an amazing cham :D

Amazing to see how smart these little chameleons can be!

It amazes me all the time. One time (with Levi) I wanted my mom to feed him a couple silkworms by hand. This was the first attempt on her part, So she held up a silkworm for him and he wouldn't budge. He didnt want anything to do with her. So I took them from her and held them up in the same spot and as soon as he saw me take them he got ready to snag it. It was almost as if he didnt know her had so he didnt trust her! lol.

My jackson will only poop on the rock in his cage and my panther refuses to poop in his cage at all! I always know when he really needs to go because he's pretty desperate to get out! Then he sits contently after he's done pooping over a trashcan. :)

My female, when in her old viv always came to the front corner to make it easy to clean up after her.......they both have new spots at the door ends! They seem to be doing their best to be easy to look after, except I spoilt my male with too many waxworms so he stopped eating properly for a few days. Back to normal now though, :)

that´s quite interesting i think. Do you think it´s possible that they do so in order to not spread parasites? I meen pooing on a rock or so means that the poo will be dry soon, do you think this may be their aim?

All the chams here free range and most use the same spot every single time and some even go about the same time each morning.

Well, as you know Chameleons are creatures of habit (just like us!). There must be some evolutionary reason for having a separate toilet area (like us!). They probably aren't thinking about parasites though, :D
Also - they do like to poo in water bowls too, so I think they will usually do it where they least like to sit, or most like to sit if the floor is far enough away :)

Mine like clockwork every day will crawl out of his sleeping spot (eating anything he finds along the way) up to his basking spot. Hangs out there until his mister goes off...drinks off of the same leaves then takes a dump...and on to hunting for more food. I guess it's his way of doing the three S's in the morning :D
