What type of mulberry tree is good for silkworms im thinking about ordering one to pick leaves off for food.

white

Silkworms like the White Mulberry _Morus alba_, but they will eat others, such as the black _Morus nigra_ too. Usually nurseries sell the non-fruiting varieties of the black mulberry, because the fruit stains anything it drops onto.

Raintree Nursery carries a good selection if you want to mail order them.

The White Fruiting Mulberry? Also is there a certain species that will grow better in Maine? How big are they when your order them?

Yes, there's white, yellow, red, etc.

I have no idea what will grow where you are, Maine is a big state. Looks like they will grow in the Portland area.

I suggest you call the nursery to see how big their plants are.

I dont think the temps in maine are right for them but i could be mistaken. It doesnt really matter that much but i would just get white mulberry becasue thats what they usually eat and its usually the most common mulberry. Im not sure how well you can get them to grow but you should be able to pull it off but different types grow at different rates. I know red mulberrys grow really fast so i would still stick with the white

I have a weeping black mulberry and live in Canada so weather should not be a problem for you. It looks like an umbrella and stays short.
Although when the birds eat the fruit their droppings do stain!
